Race Evaluation

2002 Billygoat Run:

jjcote

1. With a big gang of folks most of the way, I was among the few who cut off 200m before the last trail junction. Would have been a nice route if we hadn't gone too far around the marsh and eventually come in from the south.
2. Contoured west to the trail, while most folks were going straight. Steve Worthington followed, and I spiked the control, but he apparently missed it.
3. Out to the road, all alone, and cut back in just before the house. At the control were two guys I didn't recognize.
4. Up one big reentrant and down another, no problem.
5. Not moving too fast on the uphill. Concerned that it seemed that it was starting to rain, and I had stupidly worn the wrong glasses for that weather.
6. Decided to go up and take the trail most of the way. Found a trail, but it turned out to be some miserable twisty unmapped mountain bike trail, and I very soon had absolutely no idea where I was, and the terrain looked like nothing I could find on the map. Kept going in generally the right direction, figuring that at worst, I'd eventually get to the big ride. About 150m south of the circle, I suddenly realized where I was, and swooped right in from there (with my fingers crossed), surprised to see a bunch of faster people coming in from all kinds of directions. Nice leg!
7. Down the hill behind John Fredrickson and Alexei Azarov (I think), across some marsh, and sort of diagonally up the hill, eventually winding up about 200m west of the control, and in from there. Bob Lux arrived just before me.
8. A bit to the right, trying to get on the clean-looking ramp, but I wound up getting caught in some green just after the stone wall, allowing several people to catch up. Was worried about finding the control, but I had no problem.
9. Went pretty wide north to try to get some nice flat running, and it was at about this point that my glasses got wet enough that they became useless and I had to take them off. Was on the trails well north of the line, and misread things so that I ran past 15, across the stream, and around the bend, with Steve Worthington on my tail. Thinking I was just short of 15, I headed uphill, and really had no idea what was going on. We got into a saddle on the west edge of the circle, where Steve seemed to hope the flag would be, and I correctly figured out what we need to do, so we headed east and arrived at about the same time as some of the people we had seen at #8.
10. Countoured SSW to the small trail, and orienteered really well from there, slaloming around the marshes, and winding up on the NE edge of the circle, where I fumbled around for a bit while others caught up. I figured out what to do first and left them behind (briefly).
11. SSE to the small trail, then toward the control, cutting corners and arriving ahead of the rest of the gang. Left my glasses on the table because I was sick of carrying them.
12. Trail. Guy in gray (who I had first seen at #3) on my tail. Others arrive just after.
13. Everything was going great until about 2/3 of the way to the control, when my inability to see deposited me about 150m to the west of the control, where I had to scratch my head for a moment, and when I got to the control, my companions were now just ahead.
14. Jeff Saeger and I took the safe big trail route left around the pond, while Steve Worthington took the small trail close to the lake and was never seen again. I don't know what the rest of you people did, but our route was apparently excellent. Near the control, the guy in gray was a little confused, but Jeff and I spiked it.
15. Tearing down the hill with Jeff, got ahead of him, and almost ran too far, but stopped in the nick of time, and saw that Joe Mokszycki and somebody else had caught up.
16. Skip.
17. West to the trail, not looking back, just trying to run hard.
18. Cut the trail corner and looked back to see that three people were chasing me. One caught and and passed; turned out to be Nadim Ahmed, who ran what I thought was a little too far; in fact, I wasn't far enough. Climbed over the stony hill NE of the circle, then with Jeff and Nadim, went down the wrong reentrant (to the NW) and hooked up into the proper one. Peggy Dickison showed up as we were leaving.
19. Diagonally down to the trail got me ahead of Nadim and Jeff, but they both passed me (despite the fact that Nadim stopped to check the code on a control at the road crossing).
F. Passed Jeff, but couldn't quite catch Nadim.
