Race Evaluation

US Champs: Sprint Red

1. +00:10After the crappy Model map I was really worried what the course/map would be like. I had no idea what to expect. I was planning on winning this race and had trained for some speed. Got off to a really slow start The map didn't look right for a 1:5000. I think it is because the 2.5 meter contour makes it all wrong to me. Things look steeper than they really were. Things didn't look right. Crossed the first trail and cut down. Hard to see what was suppose to be on the map. I was suppose to be looking for a hill while running down hill. didn't make any sense. Got to the bottom and just stopped. Saw a control but still confused by the lack of hill. It was my control so I just decided the map really was as bad as the model and went on.
2. Took a bearing and went.
3. +01:10Up over the hill. Going generally down looking for a ditch. Never saw one. Went the proper distance but there wasn't anything there. I went a little farther and knew I had gone to far. Decided to bail down to the stream. i would have missed the stream if the pit (really a depression) hadn't been there. Took a bearing back from the pit and still was to far south of the control. I saw the control. I don't recally seeing the ditch. It may have been there but I remember thinking at the time that it wasn't much of one.
4. straight up the hill

Simple control. It would have been if the map had been drafted correctly. I simplified this leg to be just past the junction turn left into the reentrant. Unfornately, the map doesn't show the indistinct trail junction. I hit the junction and turned on the indistinct trail which wasn't indistinct. I then jumped left off the indistinct trail into the reentrant. There sas no control. I pondered and went back. i then saw the control on the wrong side of the trail and it turned out to be code 104. Well I was looking for control 5 so was thinking it should be 105 and kept looking. Eventually I reallized while it was control 5 it was code 104.
6. straight
7. +00:04down trail. I stopped at the first root stock and was suprised that there wasn't a control on it. There was only one rootstock on the map. It turns out the root stock I stopped at looks like a contour given the broken contour and the control circle. Some else ran over the correct rootstock so I did also.
8. Trail. I cut in to soon thinking it would be farther off the trail.
9. straight, across the gully
10. Bad route choice

Figured this would be a longer leg that just get to the top of the hill. Apparently I over simplified it. I was on the hill to the south looking for the contol that wasn't there. Finally I went out to the trail. I could see a big sign and figured it must be a sign closer to the road. So I went south on the trail. Came to a very large trail junction. I didn't like the "didtches" that were there but decided that must have been where I was and ran up the correct hill this time to the control.
11. Ran up the trail. This time I was ready for the ill mapped trail junction.
12. I decided to take the road around to avoid climb. After running down the raod I decided it didn't avoid climb so I cut across the flat spur. Back to the road to the field
13. The rest of the course was sprint like.
14. I have no idea what this was hung on. Supposedly it was a ruin but all I recall seeing was a flat spot.
