Race Evaluation

Boulder Dash 2007: Red Day 2

jjcote

1. Such a different experience from yesterday. Few of my splits are among the best, but I'm third out of 12 people who have posted splits as of right now, and among the M45s, only PG was faster for the day. Started out badly, though. Drifted way left, hit the trail at the junction, came in via the marshes, drifted too far left, climbed over the spur, and fumbled around a bit.
2. Still doing badly. Headed for the trail but missed to the left and had to climb up to it. Left it at the bend, but it seemed to take forever to get out to the road. Wasn't sure where I was, went west a bit to try and figure it out, went uphill in what I thought was the right spot, found a bunch of stony ground and some cliffs that I couldn't quite make sense of, found another control that I couldn't place on the map, then bumped into the control on a smallish rock. At this point I had lost a bunch of time, but things improved from here on in. PG picked up only 72 more seconds on me over the rest of the race, including 30 seconds on the next control.
3. Got a little high, but corrected OK.
4. About 80% of the way there I found a control that wasn't mine... but I recognized it as the one I had had some much trouble on yesterday. And that meant that the one I was looking for was one of the ones I had found yesterday, so I was able to go right to it.
5. Realized that this was the control I had found twice while lost yesterday, so I figured I had better not blow it now. I actually missed to the left, but stopped at the correct distance and corrected easily.
6. Didn't screw this up. Managed to hit the marsh 60% of the way there, used it for a handrail, and read contours the rest of the way, passing Mark Cornish just before the control.
7. Not too fast, but I kept track of where I was. The stick holding up the control had fallen, so I put it back up.
8. Kind of straight. Near the control, I ran into two people looking for control #970, which I understand was pretty tough.
9. Right to get out of the green, then straight from there. Stopped a few meters from the control not seeing it at first because a branch of something was in the way.
10. Went straight, which was dumb, and I drifted up and hit the trail anyway. Plenty of green approaching the control. This was the point where PG's lead on me was the greatest, about 11 minutes, and over the rest of the course I steadily gained a little bit back.
11. Passed Steve Fluegel. Was pretty unsure of the distance as I got close.
12. Attacked from the water stop. Until I got close, I thought I was looking for a depression.
13.
14.
15. From the junction 200m NE of the control, I went left for a little bit, then headed into the woods. Got close to the pond, went over a spur, and spotted a control on a rootstock. Realized that it was the one NW of my control, and went straight to it from there.
16.
F. Not a very good race, really, but still better than a lot of people.
