Race Evaluation

NEOC Great Brook Farm: Red

PBricker

1. Missed a bit right, and it was too thick to see the boulder, but fortunately I turned the right way and there it was.
2. Took northern trail all the way to the bend, then due south.
3. Trail to the west, attacking from the stone wall.
4. Back to the open area, attacking from bend in the field.
5. +01:30Couldn't read the contours (very faint on this map), and compass was off so I landed in the reentrant too far left and missed it. Circled up to the trail and back in.
6. +01:30Somehow got messed up on the trails and ended up attacking from the trail to the east and running up the stone wall (after standing still for a while, figuring out where I was).
7. Road to trail; then along stone wall, attacking from stone wall junction.
8. +01:00Took the smaller trail along the the pond, but didn't keep track of where I was, so when I saw a big boulder to the right, I headed south. Spiked a boulder, but not my boulder. Oops, I had attacked too soon. Back to the trail, to big boulder, due south, spiked my boulder.
9. +03:00Took big trails all the way around (should have cut the first corner, even though it was thick). Too small trail going east of the control but wasn't being careful, and went right by it. Ended up eventually going all the way back to that trail, and doing it right (attack from knoll on right side of trail, to a little knoll, and in; why couldn't I do that the first time?)
10. No problem on this trail run, except that I wasn't running very fast.
11. Crossed the swamp off the bend in the trail. Read the contours well, and spiked it.
12. Trail across the swamp, then attacked from the trail junction. Came to knoll on north end of circle first, but when there was no flag, I knew where I was.
13. Straight.
14. Trail run, then attacked between the two cliffs.
15. +03:00Kristen and another girl punched just behind me and I soon behind them. Nothing looked right, as the marshes extended west of what was mapped. We hit some unmapped stone wall and thought we were further then we were. Then, after hitting some unmapped boulders, and an unmapped trail (!), we drifted near the stone wall junction due west of the control. I knew where we were, and found it easily from there. (Kristen and the other girl, apparently, spent another five minutes looking.)
16. North to stone wall, and followed to the junction.
17. Trail run. Not moving very well at all.
18. +02:30Because I was running so slow (hip bothering), I thought it made sense to go straight across the marsh, staying north of the uncrossable part. But I think I must have just hit the top of the uncrossable part, because halfway across I started sinking in past my ankle. After extricating myself, it was a matter of hopping from tufts of marsh grass to tuft of marsh grass, trying to avoid the deep water. Not entirely successfully. Then when I climbed up the ridge to the trail, I lost some time figuring out where I was.
19. Small trail to road.
F. Around the cultivated field.
