Race Evaluation

2007 USOF Convention and Colorado 5-Days: Red

jjcote

1. Right-hand route around the worst of the marsh. Seemed like a reasonable choice, but those who went slightly left down ther trail (like Sharon) got there much quicker.
2. Saw Alar leaving (last I ever saw of him), and Plamen was up ahead (saw him off and on until around #13).
3.
4.
5.
6. Lined my compass up on the purple line from #3 to #4 instead of the north lines, and took off intending to go down the gentle spur, but actually 90 degrees off, to the SE. The terrain seemed to be going gently upward, which seemed wrong. Nice running once I corrected. Things were a little odd once I got down to the bottom, seemed like there was some rock at the end of the spur thatI don't see on the map. The control was where I expected, although I was unsure as I approached it because it looked more like a reentrant than "edge of stony ground".
7.
8. Road to just pas the two little trails. Very nice forest on this leg. Looked like the clearing might be a pretty ambiguous location, but I nailed it.
9.
10. Crossed the wet stuff on a beaver dam. A little wide to the right coming up the spurs at the end. This is where the first of the M40 pack caught up.
11. The M40 crowd roared by, and I got swept along. I was intending to go slightly to the left, but they went right, and so did I. A little parallel-error action ensued, and we were all too far to the east. They went farther east, but that didn't seem right, and then Plamen appeared from the west, followed by a woman (Karianne Hauge, I assume). I headed that way, and I spotted a couple of the M40s also doing so, but too low. I found the control and hightailed it out of there.
12. Just to the left of the line going up to the road, maybe it wasn't optimal.
13. WSW to the trail, then took the road until it started climbing the large spur that the control feature was part of. There were quite a few of us on the road, ans positions were shifting back and forth. I left the road earlier than most, I think, and Neal Barlow came past me in the woods. He went too far, and headed down the reentrant to where some other people were. I stopped and lifted my glasses to read the map carefully, and went directly up to the control. Somebody else was making noise coming down from above, and Brendan Shields was coming in as I left.
14. Left the vicinity of #13 quickly and took this leg wide to the right W of the green stuff via the trail. Ulf was just ahead of me at the control, having gone straighter.
15. Pretty much straight.
16. Straight again, Eric Buckley and Brendan got ahead of me here, I think.
17.
18.
F. Managed to have good pacing and keep up my speed (and navigation) pretty well in the latter part of the race, so that even though I saw a bunch of people starting from the north end of the map, I held most of them off, and only four (Alar, Ulf, Eric, and Brendan) finished before me.
