Race Evaluation

1.
2. +04:00Went to just about the right spot, things didn't look like I expected, went back out to trail, went right past the control feature, found the boulder cluster below, and finally spotted the flag between the two boulders.
3.
4. The map showed a trail along the edge of the explosive zone, but I didn't see one, so maybe the mapper just used that as a random symbol to mark the boundary. Glad I was told that the circle was off, because I doubt I would have seen the flag on my way past the boulder.
5.
6. Wasn't paying attention and made a wrong turn at the stone wall after the bridge, so I traveled a little farther than I needed to. There were two pretty big cliffs on that knoll, and I'm not sure if the control was on the one that's mapped.
7.
8. Took the indistinct trail.
9. Some of the white woods was really young hemlocks, which slowed me down.
10. +04:00Oof. Too far left, picked up the indistinct trail leading to the clearing, but I realized it. Unfortunately, when I got to the clearing I was in an area with a whole bunch of unmapped logging roads, and I mistook one of them for the one I wanted. Went back and forth before figuring it out.
11. Through the woods early on, then stayed on the trail later because the woods appeared to be a sea of young white pines.
12. +12:00Big error. Left the trail when it turned uphill, and hit the stream at the foot of a big cliff. I was thinking it was the southernmost one (which makes no sense), but it was probably the big one SE of the control. I also misread the contours and was expecting the boulder to be closer to the stream. So I chugged up the stream for a while until I found a boulder, which was a coule of hundred meters too far up. Realized where I was, turned around, and missed again on the way down because I was looking too close to the stream. Finally attacked successfully from the stone wall SW of the control.
13. Had trouble figuring out what trail on the ground corresponded to what on the map, and was on some unmapped indistinct things for a while. I had grabbed a ratty old pair of O-shoes for today, and didn't put any additional ductape on them. On this leg, the tape gave way, and I suddenly had a serious case of Talking Shoe, with the front half of my foot dangling out in space..
14. Slightly north of the line, and hit the big trail at the junction with the small trail that led to the bridge (which I was glad about when I saw how big the stream was). Not sure the trail is mapped right west of the stream, and I was pretty unprepared for what I found in the circle, old mill or bridge abutment or whatever it was.
F. Arrived at the finish with no punchcard. Went back and found it in front of the house, about where a dog had come out and barked at me.
