Race Evaluation

Brainard Forest: Red

cmorse

1. +00:15Trashed watch and compass at Boulder Dash - still watchless - so splits are just a guess - I know I spent about 15 minutes wandering on 7, and it was about a half hour out in getting there... Up slope, took trail east of marsh, then in. Got out on end of spur, no flag, looking back up hill saw flag off the side of spur higher up.
2. Charlie commented that this was not hung on the feature but on a nearby unmapped feature. Slowed down in the circle looking around. Flag on HUGE rootstock - if he has said rootstock, it would have been obvious from well down the hill..
3. +01:30Pretty much straight, looking to climb between cliffs up onto the top. With the fallen leaves I could not locate the small trail and wound up on the ridge just west, which meant going down and then back up onto the correct ridge.
4. +00:30This area always messes me up - don't know if map is 'fuzzy' in here or if its just me. Anyway, I came in ok but got a little left, realized it quickly and then into control
5. +00:15Straight across the marsh.. Got onto the hillside and had to scan both ways to find boulder in shadows.
6. Decided the best route was up the middle of the dry marsh - very fast running - better than the woods to either side
7. +15:00Continued on up the dry marsh, out onto trail and cut into woods just west of escarpment, pace counted up along the bottom checking cliffs as I was going 'just in case'. Hit the center of the circle cleanly (very distinct hooked cliff) but saw no flag. Clue said 1m cliff and the mapped cliff was much larger than that, but the northern end kind of dropped to about a meter or so. Very confident this is the center of the circle, but headed north along bottom of escarpment just in case it was misplaced or I copied wrong. NADA. Went back along the entire escarpment to the powerline still nothing. Climbed to the top in case description was wrong. Entire length of escarpment and very distinct at the top of the center of circle. Still nothing - assume either flag is missing (I'm first out here this AM) or I copied wrong and head for #8 after spending about 15min looking for it.
8. Got bogged down in green enroute, but hit reentrant cleanly.
9. Straight out to trail and run hard... Hit the quicksand swamp but only up to my knees - map and compass are pretty muddy though - but not as bad as Phil....
10. I'm actually getting the knack of running over the tops of the hemlock logging slash - only fall hard once...
11. Boulder hidden under logging slash, but pretty easy to hit.
12. +00:15Boulder seemed to be a bit east of where its mapped, but spotted the flag quickly enough.
13. More hemlock bouncing....
F. Dangerous downslope with the fallen leaves.. But other than my time spent on #7, it was a pretty clean, fast run with only occasional hesitations in the circle to locate the feature.
