Possum Trot Weekend: Sprint

Pink Socks

1. [NOTE: I ran this course on 11/21, when conditions were ideal.] I wanted to look at the map as little as possible before my run, so I had it sealed in an envelope until right before I started. I needed to quickly find out where the start was, and by accident, I started at the finish line. Anyway, this made my first route choice easy, sliding around the north side of the Campenile.
2. I just reversed my campus tour route here, taking Memorial to the steps leading up to Snow and around. I guess I could have aimed up for Spencer?
3. Look for the steel ball! I had to wait for a truck to cross the street, but that only cost me 1-2 seconds.
4. I was pretty sure I knew what I was looking for, but I got a little confused approaching the flag, as that walled-in area had a door wide-open, and I thought for a second that you might have put it in there. I lost maybe 1-2 seconds before I told myself, "no, that door should be closed."
5. Being an engineer, I didn't spend a whole lot of time behind the A&D building, so I took this one a little cautiously to make sure that I didn't get screwed over with walls and stuff. Once I figured it was out behind Fowler, I sped up again.
6. Ugh, not my smartest route choice, but it wasn't too horrible. I should have taken the driveway between Hoch and Anshutz, but instead I ran just north of control #10 (tour guide route), and then up a lot of stairs. I got scared by the construction, so I wanted to attack from the north, which meant I had to climb a lot of stairs. Wescoe looks totally different on an O-Map, and I was thrown off here, but I got to it without too much trouble.
7. I ran through Wescoe down all of those stairs, but there seemed to be more construction in real life than shown on the map. I thought for a second that I was going to get trapped, but I wasn't. I almost ran by the flag on the east side of Malott. Whoops!
8. Mary, you got me here. That little "tunnel" into the courtyard of Malott is something I never knew existed, so I thought that I was looking for something in between Malott and Haworth. There's also a new construction zone between those two buildings, so I thought maybe that tunnel was covered up or something. I lost almost a minute here trying to sort out what the heck was going on.
9. Seems like this one should have been faster. Maybe I got tired or something?
10. One of my favorite legs of all time. I turned and ran, and I just broad-jumped over that hedge, landing, and stumbling over the sidewalk right up to that big tree!
11. I went south. I'm curious how much longer (if at all) it would take going to the north?
12. Campus knowledge helped me here, I'll admit. Instead of counting "1, 2, 3", I counted "Summerfield, Haworth, Dole", and I turned my mind on auto-pilot for two minutes.
13. Nothing to say about this one.
14. "What building is that?... Oh, Watkins Home." Once I figured that one out, that one was pretty easy.
15. I might have messed this one up, I think. I didn't have a clue sheet, and there was a crease at the control location, so I'm not sure what I was supposed to find. I just went up to the front door of Watson, but I'm guessing that you put it down in the "moat" on the west side. See, I came from the east from around Twente (the stairs to the east of Twente), so putting the control in that western moat is a good idea.
16. I attacked from the west here. Again, I found myself saying out loud, "Oh, that's behind Lippincott."
17. Sooo.. another not-so-smart leg. I'm guessing the best thing is to take Memorial Drive (flat) to the Campenile, and then down the hill. But, for some reason, I decided to beeline it down into Marvin's grove to the start triangle and then I skirted around the Campenile to the north (for a second time in the race), and then down the hill. By going this way, I added 3 unnecessary lines of climb. However, since I took this as a route choice, did you consider that you might have competitors running through the start area mid-course? I also slipped and fell at the flag here, slipping in a hole full fo leaves. There were two people right in front of me when I did it. D'oh!
18. I went around to the north, which I think is safer. I know that sometimes the south end of the lake can get a little messy.
19. My eyes and brain found this one instantly. My legs didn't want to get there that fast.
20. Gotta keep running. Gotta keep running. I never knew this little trail existed. I don't exactly know what the feature was, but it could easily be a pile of empty beer cans!
21. Looped around to the north.
22. Again, I knew what I was looking for, so I just headed up the sidewalk.
F. I had a dog chase me. That was fun.
