1. 2336m 30:39 49 +15:12 98% 52.1 13:07   2336m 30:39 49 +15:12 98% 13:07 Pretty much followed the crowd to water tower, follow pipeline. I crossed to road when close. At end, just went up the nose and basically followed the line. Stopped in the circle -- looked right to see cadets punching.
2. 299m 7:35 58 +4:02 114% 47.0 25:21   2635m 38:14 51 +19:13 101% 14:30 up, just behind Rick & Susie
3. 823m 10:48 37 +5:46 115% 55.3 13:07   3458m 49:02 49 +24:59 104% 14:10 To right of line, eventually following Rick & Susie up the thick reentrant, around rocks at top to control.
4. 2017m 33:47 40 +18:43 124% 49.0 16:44   5475m 1:22:49 41 +43:42 112% 15:07 Started up steep trail, then decided to cut south to trails. Was doubting my decision until I ran into Rick & Susie who had gone higher to pick up the trail. We parted when they followed the trail down the cliff and I cut the corner. Didn't see them for a while. The first person I saw on the trail run was Eddie B, looking good.
5. 611m 10:45 51 +6:05 130% 47.2 17:35   6086m 1:33:34 47 +49:47 114% 15:22 Basically SSE to the trail. Charlie, Christina, Tim G. and I followed them to 5.
6. 643m 9:46 61 +6:18 182% 36.9 15:11   6729m 1:43:20 49 +56:05 119% 15:21 Ugh. Christina & Tim went high, Charlie went low and I followed him. For some reason, when he cut up I didn't like the climb and contoured around to the road. Lost mucho time and saw Rick & Susie at the aid station.
7. 6505m 1:05:57 54 +35:20 115% 47.7 10:08   13234m 2:49:17 50 +1:31:25 117% 12:47 Last I saw of Rick & Susie was them starting the trail run. I amused myself on the run by guessing Thierry's finishing time and wondering whether I would see him finish. I guessed 2:45. As I was coming down to #7, Rick & Susie were coming up and said I just missed him. Drat.
8. 716m 18:19 58 +12:30 215% 33.3 2:20 25:34   13950m 3:07:36 50 +1:43:55 124% 13:26 Bounced off the round up to watertower, then straight. The whole map seemed Escherish to me -- was I going up the whole loop?
9. 314m 5:14 56 +3:20 175% 38.2 16:40   14264m 3:12:50 50 +1:47:15 125% 13:31 straight, used rocky hill to guide me to the knoll.
10. 515m 12:05 54 +9:02 296% 26.5 3:42 23:27   14779m 3:24:55 50 +1:56:17 131% 13:51 Not optimal -- contoured around the hill, Saw a big boulder near a nose. Checked it out. Nope. Guessed it was the boulder pair 150m E of the control. Lucky guess.
11. 731m 12:43 50 +8:04 173% 39.8 17:23   15510m 3:37:38 47 +2:04:21 133% 14:01 Just S of line, following reentrant, then using the cliff across from the control to guide me in.
12. 472m 8:35 35 +5:29 177% 43.4 18:11   15982m 3:46:13 47 +2:09:50 135% 14:09 Mostly straight, used the green reentrant to put me up on the area. Saw a rock/knoll just in front of me and as I was about to check it out, I saw the flag on something I'm surprised anyone bothered mapping.
13. 117m 1:55 53 +1:14 180% 39.4 16:22   16099m 3:48:08 47 +2:10:57 135% 14:10 Straight. Tripped & fell on the way (I have *got* to learn how to run & read a map at the same time while on tricky ground.)
14. 169m 3:12 54 +2:14 231% 33.0 18:56   16268m 3:51:20 47 +2:13:11 136% 14:13 Straight. Didn't notice the water, otherwise I would have partaken. This may have affected me later.
15. 170m 4:20 36 +2:37 152% 42.2 25:29   16438m 3:55:40 47 +2:15:33 135% 14:20 As I was leaving #14, ran into David Onkst who was going to #12 and had wandered a bit off course. It wen just left of the line through some thick stuff, used the rock face on the other side to guide me in.
16. 1021m 22:26 54 +15:03 204% 34.1 2:26 21:58   17459m 4:18:06 47 +2:30:36 140% 14:46 Left of the line, found myself beating through some really thick stuff. Went by the shelter and picked up the trail behind it. Left it after the yellow/gray and followed made my way to the boulder field, where the big ones were easy to spot.
17. 692m 13:05 41 +8:18 174% 37.7 18:54   18151m 4:31:11 47 +2:38:54 142% 14:56 via #9
18. 267m 8:46 61 +7:02 406% 22.3 3:38 32:50   18418m 4:39:57 47 +2:45:30 145% 15:11 passed slightly below, hit the next rocky line and climbed up to a big rock just east of it. No joy. Then looked around and saw the flag 25m away.
19. 392m 5:29 47 +3:07 132% 44.3 13:59   18810m 4:45:26 47 +2:48:37 144% 15:10 Followed power line, staying S of it after junction.
20. 853m 13:37 46 +8:12 151% 42.3 15:57   19663m 4:59:03 47 +2:56:36 144% 15:12 Jeff S. advised me to avoid the crap on the line and suggested going to the right. So I did, passing by #26 and was wondering where the stone wall near it was until I realized that it was supposed to be a trail.
21. 1413m 38:23 61 +29:18 323% 25.5 12:47 27:09   21076m 5:37:26 51 +3:25:54 157% 16:00 Lost mucho time. Not only was I slow, but incompetent. Went around the left of the big hill, then when I hit the rocky ground N of the control I thought the control should have been at the nose. Being confused, I headed N then E to find a trail bend which I thought was the one to the E of the control. Fortunately I met up with Dave & Barb, and Barb knew what she was doing.
22. 585m 10:02 47 +6:21 172% 37.8 17:09   21661m 5:47:28 51 +3:32:07 157% 16:02 Fairly straightforward.
23. 573m 21:46 61 +17:37 424% 19.4 10:43 37:59   22234m 6:09:14 55 +3:49:44 165% 16:36 Another ugh. N. When I got to the trail I decided to follow it, then cut NW at the top. I saw the bottom of ski lifts and totally misinterpreted where I was and thought I was at the bottom, so I cut SW instead of NW. Saw cadets who informed me they were at the trail junction (triangle). They followed the trial, I tried to follow a bearing to the control (picking up David O again) and found myself by the big reentrant to the W of the control. Fought through brush to control.
24. 775m 21:47 59 +15:01 222% 32.3 3:21 28:06   23009m 6:31:01 57 +4:04:15 166% 16:59 Just to the left of the line (David went higher to the left.) I stepped on a tippy rock that launched me into more rocks. Fortunately my left thigh took the brunt, but I was walking after that. As I was approaching the control, I saw David O come in from the right (wtf?)
25. 1495m 35:41 60 +25:37 254% 28.8 8:46 23:52   24504m 7:06:42 57 +4:29:52 172% 17:24 SW to trail, then followed trail around hillside. My intention was to follow the trail most of the way, but when it started going up again, I took a rest, and then changed my plan and went more or less straight from there.
26. 756m 13:32 59 +10:32 351% 25.7 4:25 17:54   25260m 7:20:14 57 +4:39:51 174% 17:25 Since I was going so slow, I decided to see how close I could follow the line. I did pretty well.
27. 380m 6:27 60 +4:00 163% 38.6 16:58   25640m 7:26:41 57 +4:43:33 174% 17:25 A leisurely stroll back.
