1. 320m 2:40 4 +50 45% 82.7 8:20   320m 2:40 4 +50 45% 8:20 Man was this a nicely planned course! And the thing is, you don't realize how well it was planned until you get back, look at other people's splits and routes, and realize that a few routes you took weren't that great, and some that looked manifestly correct were indeed, by a margin. I was 50 seconds behind Sergei on this one but don't consider this to be a loss. I had a nice introduction to the map and hesitated a bit near the control, gathering map info in the process.
2. 365m 4:38 7 +1:38 54% 69.3 1:20 1:02 12:41   685m 7:18 5 +2:26 50% 10:39 I did not read out the first long saddle correctly and searched in it.
3. 500m 3:22 2 +4 2% 102.0 6:44   1185m 10:40 4 +1:16 13% 9:00 I decided to turn the intensity down a notch because the HR was already sky-high and because I didn't want to end up bouncing around the woods and not having a good time. The terrain was so slow that this tactic paid off.
4. 150m 1:13 3 +2 3% 98.6 8:06   1335m 11:53 4 +1:17 12% 8:54
5. 565m 7:05 4 +53 14% 89.3 12:32   1900m 18:58 5 +1:00 6% 9:58 I held back again right after the trail crossing, and that paid off later in the course (#12–#17).
6. 495m 3:43 1 -7 -3% 103.6 7:30   2395m 22:41 3 +43 3% 9:28
7. 185m 1:42 4 +17 20% 89.5 9:11   2580m 24:23 3 +1:00 4% 9:27
8. 390m 3:39 4 +35 19% 89.8 9:21   2970m 28:02 4 +58 4% 9:26 I probably left the trail too soon, a compulsive desire to go more straight than I can. Followed by Jan Urban. Around left on the trail was a good option that I didn't see.
9. 520m 4:51 6 +1:01 27% 85.0 50 9:19   3490m 32:53 4 +1:54 6% 9:25 Here's where straight was best and hardest to execute. I had decided already that the woods were mostly crap, and just realized, upsettingly, that there was an around option to #8, so did the around—lost probably 50 seconds. Saw Ross doing the #15–#16.
10. 315m 2:42 5 +29 22% 85.2 8:34   3805m 35:35 4 +2:18 7% 9:21
11. 330m 3:44 6 +1:00 37% 79.6 11:18   4135m 39:19 4 +2:45 8% 9:30 Drinking took about 30 seconds.
12. 1200m 11:01 3 +44 7% 97.5 9:10   5335m 50:20 4 +3:00 6% 9:26 Around! I think the two routes were about equivalent timewise, so the one with the least consequences wins—the easy one. Followed Rick DeWitt, passing him at the first trail junction (on-on-on). As I dropped down into the control's valley, Alan Young was coming up from behind and catching up fast. Alan almost beat me at the Billygoat this year, so I thought I was getting some quick company.
13. 485m 4:28 1 -28 -9% 107.7 9:12   5820m 54:48 3 +1:54 4% 9:24 The company disappeared as I executed the around option nicely. Looking at the splits, I guess it mattered a lot where exactly one hit the trail.
14. 370m 2:14 3 +5 4% 97.8 6:02   6190m 57:02 3 +1:58 4% 9:12 A bearded HVO guy (Declan Hennelly?) was around. I saw him again as I left #16, he was coming in.
15. 520m 4:48 2 +5 2% 100.0 9:13   6710m 1:01:50 3 +1:35 3% 9:12
16. 1280m 11:20 5 +1:58 21% 88.8 1:50 8:51   7990m 1:13:10 3 +2:25 3% 9:09 Here's where straight was best, judging by Mihai's split. But most everybody was protecting their reasonably boom-free races at this point, so my understanding is most people went around.
17. 380m 3:56 5 +22 10% 91.4 10:21   8370m 1:17:06 3 +2:47 4% 9:12
18. 430m 5:24 5 +2:04 62% 67.0 1:35 1:21 12:33   8800m 1:22:30 3 +4:51 6% 9:22 I sucked mightily as I didn't follow the plan. I had made up the plan on the way to #16; it was to use either of the N–S trails to get S to the NW, white face of the spur the control was on, and quickly drop in. I went straight-ish instead. Ed White was walking, gently stepping over all the crap; I was running locally around the crap and making about the same progress as Ed. Then I stopped short of the control, hesitatingly, and Ed walked past me. Grrr.
19. 245m 2:29 5 +22 17% 92.2 10:08   9045m 1:24:59 3 +5:13 7% 9:23 On-in...
20. 185m 1:34 8 +22 31% 78.7 8:28   9230m 1:26:33 3 +5:35 7% 9:22
21. 50m 15 9 +6 67% 64.4 5:00   9280m 1:26:48 4 +5:39 7% 9:21 Graeme pulled in just as I was exiting the chute. I was genuinely amazed when I saw the results—I thought low 70s for Will or William, mid-70s for Eric (rogaine).
