Two of our last three presidents lost the popular vote, which has made that idiosyncrasy of American democracy, the U. S. Electoral College, somewhat controversial. The Electoral College was a compromise between electing the president by popular vote versus by the legislature. For our June rogaine we will be showcasing the electoral college with 51 controls representing the fifty states plus the District of Columbia. A state’s control will be worth its number of electors in the college. Our venue will be Beaver Creek State Forest in St. Lawrence County. One of its unique features is the mother of all beaver dams at 213 m to an island. There’s even a mine. Come out and orienteer in some challenging, but beautiful terrain and maybe learn something new about America’s Electoral College.
