Why aren't Mountain Marathons popular in North America, similar to the UK...?

The closest thing I can find to them in North Americas is "the Stockville is a two-day foot and navigation event, inspired by the mountain marathons of Europe and the UK."

I'm going to cross post on the Orienteering side of Attackpoint because it's also related to Rogaining.

I think I've seen this post somewhere before. It had a different ending though.

I’ve done a couple of mountain marathons in Sweden and Scotland, and they were really fun! As far as I know, there is only The Stockville in North America at the moment, and the reviews have been excellent.

Here is a link to probably one of the toughest in the US. This group puts on first class races as well.
