Discussion: Winter Paddle Training - Saturday March 16 (Mississauga, Ontario)

in: Adventure Racing; General

Feb 4, 2013 4:08 AM #
AngrySeagull:
My teammate Mike & I will be racing in the 2013 Southern Ontario Amazing Race this June. This event is the single largest fundraiser for the Children's Foundation of Guelph/Wellington, having raised $478,000 over 9 years. As part of our fundraising efforts, we are hosting an indoor paddle training session on Saturday March 2nd at the Mississauga Canoe Club and you are invited!

Two options are available:
1) 1-hour Learn to Paddle Efficiently class for beginners;
2) 2-hour paddle fitness training session for adventure racers and those with some kayak experience.

LEARN TO PADDLE EFFICIENTLY - 12:00 to 1:00
Learn effective technique for efficiently paddling kayaks and canoes, and get a great fitness workout for your core and cardio. Open to those donating at least $40.

PADDLE FIT TRAINING SESSION - 1:00 to 3:00
We'll start with a short review of efficient technique and training drills, then quickly work into lots of strength, endurance and technique-reinforcing training sets. Open to those donating at least $60.

Donations can be made online at http://www.therace.ca/2013racers/jaymike.html or can be made the day of the clinic by cash or cheque.

Space is limited to 15 in each session, so please let us know you will be attending in order to reserve your spot.

Thanks for any support!

I used to paddle there all the time and really miss it. This is a terrific opportunity! Any chance it might be repeated on another date?
Feb 4, 2013 2:52 PM #
Funderstormin:
I wondered the same thing. Can't make the 2nd but have loved these sessions in the past!
Feb 4, 2013 3:49 PM #
osteo:
AS - BossyGoat and I are new to paddling our canoe with kayak paddles (just got paddles a couple weeks ago), I'm thinking doing both sessions would be a good thing for us and get us pre-prepped for techniques, as it turns out that was planned to be a long team training day for us as well. Do you think the 3 hrs would totally wreck us?! or be a good thing?
Feb 4, 2013 4:10 PM #
AngrySeagull:
Bash & Funderstorm.. If the interest is there, I can make a second date happen. Any specific Saturdays in late March/early April that work for you?
Feb 4, 2013 4:17 PM #
AngrySeagull:
Osteo - My best guess is that doing the full 3-hours would wreck you but in a good way! There will be some mixing in of canoe paddling and SUP paddling sets, too. Those different sets will give your kayak muscles a bit of a break and recovery (or at least work them differently). If it does end up being too much to do the full 3, you can always bail partway through and then I can give you a bit of a break on a future session.. since it sounds like a second may be coming, too!
Feb 4, 2013 4:22 PM #
Timato:
Angry Seagull: I'd be interested on a different date as well if it was offered.
Feb 4, 2013 4:30 PM #
Double_Downon11:
Great idea AngrySeagull. Unfortunately, the 2nd doesn't work either so if there is another date, I'd definitely be interested.
Feb 4, 2013 4:37 PM #
AngrySeagull:
My goodness, what am I missing? Where is everyone going on the 2nd???
Feb 4, 2013 4:42 PM #
Double_Downon11:
Snowgaine for a few of us.
Feb 4, 2013 5:04 PM #
AngrySeagull:
Ahh... Saturday March 16 or 30 might work.. Who would be in for each of those dates?
Feb 4, 2013 5:34 PM #
osteo:
AS - ok, save me 2 spots for sure, we'll bring cash that day. There is nothing wrong with being sore, after all we are adventure racers, pain and discomfort is to be expected!

Sitting here with BossyGoat, she really dislikes the cold and would much rather paddle in warmth than entertain the thought of a long run outside!

I may have 1 more, possibly 2, will confirm.

D

p.s. We've never been there, can you add the location and if there is anything else we may need to bring (paddles, pfd's, etc...)
Feb 4, 2013 6:14 PM #
WandAR:
16th & possibley the 30th are both better days for me too.
Really want to try this. Have heard such great things.
Feb 4, 2013 6:20 PM #
osteo:
ok, now confirmed for 3 - Team Mountain Goat leads the pack!! haha!!!
Feb 4, 2013 6:39 PM #
Bash:
Snowgaine is my issue too (although we're not 100% committed yet). March 16 would work for me. We fly to Argentina six days later for Tierra Viva so it wouldn't hurt to paddle in real water instead of on our kayak erg.
Feb 4, 2013 7:20 PM #
Funderstormin:
Count me and Andrew in for the 16th AngrySeagull! :)
Feb 4, 2013 7:32 PM #
AngrySeagull:
WOW... That came together quickly. GO ATTACKPOINT!
I'll do some confirming with the canoe club and will get March 16th together... right after I get Johanne's signature on my permission form.
Feb 4, 2013 7:39 PM #
simpy:
16th for me too. Please.!

I can also do the 2nd. Just reworked my sched :)
Feb 4, 2013 7:43 PM #
Timato:
I'd be interested in the 16th if there's still a spot.
Feb 4, 2013 8:08 PM #
Bash:
Please add 'Bent to the 16th as well.
Feb 4, 2013 9:13 PM #
hingo:
Sign me up the 16th please.
Feb 5, 2013 2:54 AM #
Bash:
On the 16th, would it just be the 2-hour paddle fitness session for adventure racers?
Feb 5, 2013 3:26 AM #
AngrySeagull:
Looks like the 16th will work! Yes, I'm thinking only the 2-hour session on the 16th, 12:00-2:00pm.
Feb 5, 2013 3:32 AM #
AngrySeagull:
To add the 16th, I'll need a few people to volunteer to donate cash and forgo the tax receipt in order to cover the cost of the paddle pool rental, unless I can find a paddle training "title sponsor" who will donate the rental cost. All contributions above the paddle pool cost will go directly to the Children's Foundation.

So far the March 16th list looks like: Bash & Bent, Funderstorm and Mr.Funderstorm (hee hee!), Simpy, Tiny, Hingo. That's 7 confirmed. 8 spots left!
Feb 5, 2013 3:33 AM #
Bash:
Thank you, AngrySeagull! We used to do Bill Trayling's hydrospinning classes there all the time. It will be a treat to go back.
Feb 5, 2013 3:34 AM #
Bash:
What's the cost of the paddle pool rental?
Feb 5, 2013 3:44 AM #
AngrySeagull:
Location: Mississauga Canoe Club, 31 Front Street N, Mississauga

Bring paddling clothes that can get a bit wet, change of clothes, towel, whatever water and fuel you will need for the 2 or 3 hrs. You may want water shoes or racing shoes to wear (they will get wet); you can also go barefoot if you prefer. No PFD required; Paddles are provided but you are welcome to bring your personal paddle if you want to use it.
Feb 5, 2013 3:46 AM #
AngrySeagull:
Pool rental is $220 +HST (for the 2-hrs). I'm waiting to hear back from MCC's Board of Governors on whether they will donate the hours, or donate a reduced rate.
Feb 5, 2013 4:42 AM #
osteo:
perfect, thanks AngrySeagull - we'll see you then.

Double_Downon11:
I'm in for the 16th! Thx!
Feb 5, 2013 1:39 PM #
WandAR:
16th for me please.
Feb 5, 2013 3:25 PM #
Bash:
Osteo, are you in with three people for the 2nd and 16th both? If so, there are only 3 places left so we'd all better write our teammates fast! :)
Feb 5, 2013 4:04 PM #
osteo:
Good question:

Mar 2nd - 3 people for both sessions (1-3p)
Mar 16th - 2 people

The 2nd is a team training day for us so this works out well, but kinda hits the middle of the day and a hour drive on both ends. I think on our drive home we will hit JoyRide150 (www.joyride150.com) for some bike skills! (assuming we have arms and core left to control our bike!).
Feb 5, 2013 7:08 PM #
AngrySeagull:
Yowser!!! 11 scheduled for the 16th now; 4 spaces left.

@Simpy - Are you in for the 2nd, too, or just 16th?
Feb 6, 2013 12:04 AM #
simpy:
AngrySeagull.

My sched rework did not pass the test with the boss. I am good for only the 16th.

Thanks
Feb 6, 2013 2:39 AM #
1L:
Well I suppose we'll have more focused attention on the 2nd hey Osteo? Way to be a fundraising rock star Angry Seagull! Brilliant idea!
Feb 6, 2013 2:56 AM #
osteo:
1L - thanks! its a good cause, but it will hurt the pocket book! who said AR was a cheap sport?!!!
Feb 6, 2013 3:01 AM #
AngrySeagull:
I'll try to make it sure it hurts your legs, butt and core enough to make you forget about the charitable pocket book hurt!
Feb 6, 2013 3:02 AM #
AngrySeagull:
No worries, Simpy. Those bosses tend to be tough test markers some days.
Feb 6, 2013 3:35 AM #
osteo:
Bring it on!
Feb 6, 2013 1:26 PM #
Timato:
Hi AngrySeagull,

As I mentioned last night please add Audrey Kelly to the list for the 16th.

Thanks.

AngrySeagull:
Done! 3 spots left for the 16th. Who wants one???
Feb 15, 2013 10:05 PM #
wilberto:
Jay, so any spots left for either?
Feb 16, 2013 12:38 AM #
AngrySeagull:
Hey wilberto! Still 3 spots for the 16th; Lots of spots for both options on the 2nd.
Feb 16, 2013 1:40 AM #
Chief:
So on 16th its at 12ÉÉ
Feb 16, 2013 3:53 AM #
AngrySeagull:
Yes. March 16th is 12:00-2:00 Paddle Fitness.
March 2nd is 12:00-1:00 'Learn to Paddle Efficiently' and 1:00-3:00 Paddle Fitness
Feb 16, 2013 7:49 PM #
WandAR:
AngrySeagull how should we register for the Mar. 16th or do we just bring cash to the location?
Feb 23, 2013 4:08 AM #
AngrySeagull:
Hey WandAR... Best thing for the 16th is to just bring cash the day of. For the 16th session, I'm thinking we'll just do cash with $20 from each covering rental cost and $40 being donation to Children's Foundation.
Feb 26, 2013 2:56 AM #
AngrySeagull:
Down to just 2 spaces remaining on the 16th!
Feb 26, 2013 6:44 PM #
WandAR:
Sweet! Thanks! Can't wait for the 16th.
Mar 3, 2013 12:21 AM #
osteo:
Just home from our long training day which included being tortured by Jay and Mike for 3hrs... gotta say, it was a blast and I (we) learned so much. If I remember 1/2 of what we did I know we will be 10x stronger in the water!

If you were on the fence, I gotta say it was well worth it.

AngrySeagull:
We've had a couple of requests to add another 1-hr Intro Paddling session for the 16th. This time it would be after the 2-hr workout, so it won't work as well for folks to stay for the full 3 hours.. BUT if you know someone who might be interested, pass the word along and have them get in touch with me. We'll be making a decision in the next few days.
Mar 3, 2013 11:47 PM #
AngrySeagull:
And thanks for the great feedback, osteo. It's amazing how much stronger you guys got over the duration of the session (though I could tell you were really feeling it for the last 15 minutes!). Thanks again for coming!

osteo:
Was out for a HTFU run this evening with Simpy and a couple Ultra runners I know and he was asking about what I was going to wear to this on Saturday.... which had me thinking for those going it might be worthwhile to share if you have not been there before.

The pool area is to put is simply... COLD. Because we are working it is not so bad, but the water I don't think is heated and you are getting splashed a fair bit so you do get chilled (at least both BossyGoat and I did).

Jay mentions above about footwear either racing shoes, or some such and I agree. Bossy forgot to bring hers and decided to go barefoot (which is fine) but again, the splashing chilled her feet and you end up resting your feet on the metal foot rest which was not too pleasant.

I plan on wearing icebreaker long sleeve and possibly 3/4 icebreaker tights, it will all be wet from the splashing but still offer some warmth.
HTH.

Bash:
Bash 'n' 'Bent donation is done. And I will bring your USB key to the session.
Mar 14, 2013 3:13 PM #
wilberto:
AngrySeagull, put me down for 1 of the last spots. See you Saturday.

Starbucks date on Lakeshore Ave. afterward?
Mar 14, 2013 3:52 PM #
AngrySeagull:
Well, I'm married so I usually prefer that my date requests not be online and so easily traceable, but I guess you're in the same married position, so I'm in.
Mar 14, 2013 3:59 PM #
WandAR:
Well then I won't invite you married people to my place afterwards. ;-)
It is close & High Park is across the street to run in & I'm equiped with Kicking Horse coffee & a Keurig.

But Starbucks is good too. See you all Saturday.
Mar 14, 2013 4:19 PM #
Trentina:
Spots left for the MCC paddle?
Mar 14, 2013 4:30 PM #
AngrySeagull:
We've got 1 spot left, Trentina. Want it?
Mar 14, 2013 5:02 PM #
Bash:
Heheh. To clarify, I'm inviting you *all* on that date including my husband, who will also be paddling. We used to do Bill Trayling's paddle classes on Wednesdays at 6 a.m., and without the post-paddle Starbucks visits, we wouldn't have survived!
Mar 14, 2013 5:23 PM #
AngrySeagull:
Well that's an embarrassing misunderstanding on my part....
Mar 14, 2013 6:30 PM #
WandAR:
Just realized my invite may sound like I am inviting only single people to my place. Now that is embarrassing and could give me an inappropriate reputation. Oh my. This is what editors are for. :-)

At least it is not as bad as some of the recent newspaper headlines:

"People are Shocked by Obama's Huge Package"

"The New Pope is Getting Ready to Come Out"

Is this paddle class sponsored by AshleyMadison?

Thanks for the updated info AS! Looking forward to all the help I can get on Saturday.
Mar 15, 2013 4:30 AM #
hingo:
see you on Saturday. Since we are on the topic of spouses, my wife can attest to how cold the water in the paddle pool is (no its not heated) - on her one and only visit she fell in right at the start and had to paddle for an hour in wet clothes :-( For some reason she declined the offer to join me on Saturday.
Mar 15, 2013 4:56 PM #
Double_Downon11:
Anyone interested in a Lakeshore/front run before Paddle training tomorrow? I'm thinking about getting there around 10 am and doing a run beside the lake down towards Oakville.
Mar 17, 2013 2:08 PM #

HUGE Thanks to all of you who came out yesterday!! Thank you for the support!
Mar 17, 2013 7:57 PM #
