We will need more info. In fact, IMO, the 1st page of the JST application should also be used for the JDT.

But, don't want to make the development team app too intimidating. It is useful for us to know abilities, pace, what courses they are running, but don't want them to be intimidated into putting off the application because they have never timed a mile or 3 km run, etc.

Agreed - so far we've NOT been planning to ask much about their athletic capabilities, focusing instead more on what they want to get out of orienteering - setting their own goals.

It implies that if they join the Development Team then they automatically become an OUSA member. Don't they still have to pay the membership dues? and shouldn't this be made clear?

Good question; the $5 we expect to raise from suggested donations, but maybe we could ask them to give an extra $5 if they aren't members so that it's fair. Haven't talked this through or decided it. Don't want to make the OUSA membership an energy barrier though.

And while $5 officially gets them a Junior membership, I suggest you encourage them to spend the $15 on a Student membership so that they will receive OUSA publications.

Since OUSA membership is required (G.2.5, p83 of the new rules), we should tell them this up front, and ask for the $15 (so they get O/NA, and their club gets a vote) along with their info, or just link them to the online membership page.

I suspect that the vast majority of JDT applicants will already be OUSA members.

Are we (orienteers) really that cheap?
Does $15 a year ruin the family ecomy?

The way it has been presented I´d say that the opportunity to participate in JDT alone - or JST, naturally - would be worth the money.

There are several junior / school leagues in the country. At least one of them (TROL) gives kids an OUSA student ($15) membership as part of their season pass. Perhaps a similar model could somehow be applied.
Also clubs or individuals could consider making a grant if they know of a family that has exceptional financial need.
