Discussion: Eco-Challenge on Canadian TV

in: Adventure Racing; Off-Course

wilberto:
FYI, rolling through the channel guide and discovered EcoChallenge Borneo running on something called GameTV. (Rogers 73/288 in Toronto). Is Team Playboy Extreme still actively racing? ;)

Oh man, the Borneo race was one of my favorites!
Ascending out of caves full of bat dung!
Oct 4, 2012 2:36 AM #
Carbons Offset:
Not that I did it. I just watched the TV broadcast and thought "okay, some of adventure racing looks fun, but those racers that go for a week on minimal sleep are just stupid"....
Oct 4, 2012 3:12 AM #
Bash:
Whereas I watched it and thought, "Where do I sign up?" Silly girl... that has turned out to be a very expensive and time-consuming thought. :)
Oct 4, 2012 5:52 AM #
Skid185:
I think I might still have that race "taped". Yup on the VCR.
Oct 4, 2012 1:34 PM #
WandAR:
Yeah, I caught that too. I think Borneo Eco was the last one & the one Popik's did. Mike "the pipewrench" Popik makes a couple cameos. He will be at Raid the Hammer so might be able to get an autograph or maybe he has a couple of pics of the playboys to share.

Double_Downon11:
I'll never forget the one poor guy who managed to get leech up his urethra. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to block that out of my mind since and felt I needed to share it once again on AP.

The jungle-critter perils also produced a statement no one has ever wanted to hear, let alone utter: "I noticed a leech disappearing up my urethra."

Gulp..
Oct 4, 2012 2:43 PM #
WandAR:
Yup DD11 I never forgot that too. Yuck!
Or the guy that got the stick in his chest. That guy should have stayed in the office at Ernst & Young. lol

AngrySeagull:
Borneo was the third last EcoChallenge - followed by New Zealand and the final one was Fiji. Fiji in 2002, I believe.
Oct 4, 2012 4:27 PM #
WandAR:
Ahhh, thanks for the correction. I remeber NZ, but missed Fiji.
Oct 4, 2012 4:33 PM #
JayXC:
I loved the Dr.'s response over the radio talking to the leech guy. Something like "Well not to worry, they typically move on once they're full."
Oct 4, 2012 5:42 PM #
Double_Downon11:
JayXC...Exactly. Found this...

Second, an update. Well, the actual incident wasn't as exciting as I thought it might be (big surprise). But, it all started with a guy calling in on the radio, saying "I felt a bite on my willy and saw a leech disappear up my urethra." Surprisingly, the doctors weren't at all worried.

"Once it's full of blood it'll come back out. ( ) Then, it'll just heal naturally. Until then, just drink plenty of water."

Not sure why I looked this up...I really don't want to think about this.

Continuing the Eco Challenge Borneo medical theme that makes one cringe: Leptospirosis!
Oct 4, 2012 7:11 PM #
osteo:
I started to follow this conversation till DD11 brought up the leeches and then kept reading like I was watching a train wreck! that is one little creature I just don't like! I remember seeing one wading through one of the many swamps in the WT - I could swear it was staring up at me just waiting... yuck!

Remember, don't burn or salt them, either scrap them off or let them drop off on their own. If you burn or salt them they will die but in the process they regurgitate everything in their gut back into your now exposed and tasty flesh! yum!

Back to the Eco-Challenges, I happen to have Fiji, Argentina, Morocco, Utah, NZ and BC in my computer. The quality is not spectacular considering how old they are but if anyone wants I can dump them up in my drop box.
Oct 4, 2012 7:21 PM #
Bash:
You don't even have to leave North America for leptospirosis. About a quarter of the participants in a Florida race (USARA Champs, maybe?) in 2005 contracted lepto.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20146629

I'm not sure which disease afflicted some of the competitors in the first Costa Rica adventure race but I think it may have been lepto as well.

In fact, it's such a well-known phenomenon that the Atlanta Center for Disease Control has a page on "Adventure Racing and Leptospirosis".

http://www.cdc.gov/leptospirosis/features/adventur...

I'd rather take bears and mosquitoes any day! :)
Oct 4, 2012 7:25 PM #
Double_Downon11:
Wonder how it compares to midges? :(

Thanks for the tips Osteo on what to do re:leeches. Hopefully, I don't have to worry about them at FAC this weekend.
Oct 4, 2012 7:29 PM #
Bash:
I went on an overnight backpacking trip in Queenland, Australia where more than half of the group got leeches on the eyeball. They would crawl up under the lid quickly, then you were supposed to let them fill up and drop out awhile later. 'Bent and I were *extremely* diligent and stayed free of eyeball leeches. We had them elsewhere though. (Yecchh.)
Oct 4, 2012 7:32 PM #
Double_Downon11:
#!*!%! What have I done with this conversation. My apologies...lol. Bash that is crazy!
Oct 4, 2012 7:58 PM #
Bash:
When I said we got leeches "elsewhere", I didn't mean elsewhere, if you get my drift. But some of the men in shorts were pretty nervous during the hike. Social norms went out the window. We were all reaching underneath strangers' clothing to help pick the darned things off.
Oct 4, 2012 8:25 PM #
JayXC:
From Bash's link to the Atlanta Center for Disease Control- "Avoid participation in adventure racing activities if you have any cuts or abrasion of the skin.".
HOW DO YOU THINK I GET THOSE CUTS AND ABRASIONS????
Oct 4, 2012 11:02 PM #
Clean:
I am cringing and laughing at the same time; this thread is gold.

I know next-to-nothing about AR, had no idea that's what it was called at the time, but EVEN I remember that guy saying that thing about the leech and his urethra. Since I certainly never actually watched any of the Eco's, that profoundly memorable line must have made it into the commercials. :D And consequently into my brain. FOREVER. I continue to fear swamps and murky ponds, and I will probably never do an adventure race as a result.

Another Yes for getting our hands on old Ecos to watch. They would be great for indoor spin training this winter. I'm guessing some of it will be pretty funny by today's racing standards: the gear (high tops, boots, baby!), the pace (OMG they're walking that road section?)

And another Yes for: Carbon, that's disgusting!

@ Bash. Yes, that was the USARA champs in Florida. I was contacted by the CDC afterwards and had a blood test done, but was one of those who came up negative. Not because of having stayed out of the swamp water, however.

Bash:
Maybe you didn't inhale. ;) Glad you escaped the illness.

Yes, please re the old Ecos. I like the idea of watching them on the trainer. If a bunch of us re-watch them, we could come back here and share our favourite moments from each one.

@ Osteo.

Yes for the Eco!!! I have British Columbia on VHS and for the last 10+ years I've been trying to get the others on any format. Mark Burnett (producer) had a major falling out with Discovery Networks. As a result, no Eco-Challenges have been available for purchase. I emailed the production company and asked if there was a work-around, but no luck as they're not allowed to release it without Discovery Networks' approval. I've been able to download sections of Utah, Borneo, Morocco, NZ, and Patagonia but all are incomplete.

Good lord! what have I done!!! I'm on it folks!

BiT - up to you, I actually have DVD's of all of them if you want to swing by, unless you want to dump them into your computer.

Here is the full list, but quality is not the greatest, some are VHS, a throw back from way back! I don't think I will have enough room in my Dropbox! nope, not near enough space, I'll dump them up in groups, leave them up for a couple days and then remove and change.

I have:

Eco Challenge Borneo
Eco Challenge Australia
Eco Fiji (but being aired now as JayXC mentioned)
Eco Utah
Eco New Zealand
Eco Argentina
Eco BC

Primal Quest
PC San Juan Isl
PC Telluride
PC Tahoe
PC Utah
PC Southern Traverse

2001 AR World Championships (I may watch this while I have lunch!)

ELF Philipines - not quite sure what that is, I just tried watching it and the quality is crap, when fast forwarding it, I got a blank screen. I may copy it onto my hard drive and try again later.

Argentina 1 & 2 are up as is Utah, but my DropBox is full and doesn't show which of the Morocco did not fit even though on my end they both have green checkmarks.
Nov 3, 2012 10:43 AM #
osteo:
Guys - seems Argentina got accidentally removed from the shared folder down by a DropBox newbie early this morning! therefore Morocco should now be available.

I'll put up something else and if anyone still needs Argentina I'll put them up again later.

D

p.s. - maybe someone with more DropBox experience can correct me if I am wrong, but if you get the message that your DropBox is full move the downloaded files into another folder on your computer to free up space, don't delete them from your DB folder. It seems if you delete them from the DB folder, you are deleting them from my DB folder as it is shared access.
Nov 3, 2012 3:51 PM #
Bash:
:( I did not think that removing files from my Dropbox to make more space for Morocco would delete files from Osteo's Dropbox too. I assumed the original file owner would be protected. Sorry, all!
Nov 3, 2012 4:16 PM #
Carbons Offset:
I've just started downloading now.
So, should I download whatever is in the Dropbox, then *copy* it to a separate folder on my own computer for my own keeping, and then let Osteo do whatever deleting/managing of which files are in the Dropbox? And I shouldn't delete any files in the Dropbox, even if it looks like it is "my" Dropbox?
Nov 3, 2012 4:37 PM #
Bash:
Yes. I thought "my" Dropbox was truly mine - a view on Osteo's Dropbox. When I removed Argentina from my Dropbox, I had enough space to start downloading Morocco so it seemed to be working just fine. But then I had niggling doubts so I wrote Osteo just to be sure... :(
Nov 3, 2012 4:43 PM #
mayer22:
I don't do anything in my dropbox I just download them from his dropbox straight to my computer. Seems to me the easiest way.
Nov 3, 2012 4:59 PM #
Bash:
I just followed the instructions Dropbox gave me when I got Osteo's e-mail. I had to create a Dropbox ID and download some software to my computer. Although we are all downloading files from Osteo's folder, his shared folder also appears in my Dropbox online. It was so large that it overflowed my allotted space so Dropbox prompted me to buy more storage or clear something out. I could see that Morocco was there but I couldn't access it because I was over my limit, and I'd already downloaded Argentina. Turns out Osteo was seeing the same thing in his Dropbox - but I fixed that problem for him. :)
Nov 3, 2012 5:34 PM #
carbon:
Man, racing is easier... ;) kidding.

Looking forward to having all of these. Thanks Osteo!
Nov 3, 2012 6:34 PM #
Carbons Offset:
Sweet. I found 2 Moroccos and a New Zealand 01 of 04 in the Dropbox, and have made copies in a different folder on my own computer. Couldn't see any Argentina in the Dropbox.
Nov 3, 2012 6:38 PM #
Carbons Offset:
Although it does seem to indicate that there is 4.8 GB in the Dropbox even though I can only access 2.0GB as a freeloader (or I think they bumped me to 2.5 as a gift)

Or maybe I'm not fully understanding the difference between "my" Dropbox and Osteo's Dropbox.
Nov 3, 2012 7:00 PM #
osteo:
Yup, racing is easier! apparently we are not computer tech geeks... where is Simpy and BiT when we need them?!!!

If I understand it correctly, Carbon Off... you might have seen the limit on my DB (which has now been bumped up more!) but I think you start off with 2 or 2.5GB.

Argentina is now gone, I will re-post it later and send you an email when I do.

According to my DB I am maxed out again so all that is available is Morocco and New Zealand 1
Nov 3, 2012 7:05 PM #
Bash:
The difference between "your" Dropbox and Osteo's Dropbox is the source of the confusion. They gave me 2.5 GB of storage for free to start and since there appears to be only one physical copy of each file on their server (in Osteo's Dropbox), I'm not really using any storage. But when the folder is shared with us, it gets double-counted as part of our storage *and* part of Osteo's storage. (He was also using a freebie account and had hit his limit.) LIke you, I was over 4 GB and unable to download anything more until I paid a fee or moved something out of "my" Dropbox. So I removed Argentina since I didn't need it anymore and that put me under 2.5 GB and enabled me to start downloading Morocco. But Argentina is gone for everyone now. :( (Osteo still has it - it just isn't online anymore.)
Nov 3, 2012 7:14 PM #
Bender:
I think this can be avoided by Osteo placing them in his public folder. Then email around a link to the files (that way it won't matter if recipient has DB or not) and the recipient can download while leaving the posted files untouched.

Osteo - once the files are in your public folder you can right click > copy public link > copy&paste into a distribution email.

BTW... count me too ;) cpiller at gmail dot com Thanks.

Oh and I can offer up a rough VHS transfer of RTNX Nfld 2001 if there are any interested parties.

I kept things simple like mayer22. I didn't bother installing Dropbox, and just stuck to accessing osteo's via a browser. I just right click on the file in osteo's Dropbox and select download.
Nov 4, 2012 3:01 AM #
Bash:
Did you not have to create a Dropbox account then? When I clicked on Osteo's link, it opened a browser tab where the only choices were to login to Dropbox or create a new account. It is the online account that exceeded its storage - nothing to do with the software on my Mac. In any case, it's all working now - lots of new AR movie clips to watch!

Bash I did have to create an account. Once I did that it offered a few ways to access files, one which was to just view them via a browser. I just need to log in and download.
Nov 4, 2012 4:31 AM #
Bender:
If you grab a file from someone's Dropbox folder shared with you, it is removed from the Dropbox until you put it back. It's to help with document control when group work is being done on same document (think of a shared DB folder as a library shelf). So better way to do things is copy the file from the shared DB folder rather than moving it to your local drive.

Hopefully the use of a public link should resolve this as I believe by default it's a copy command and not a move command.
Nov 4, 2012 4:38 AM #
Bash:
I've learned something useful - it takes 2 seconds to restore a deleted file in Dropbox and since I have access to your shared directory, I've restored as many files as my storage space allowed. (Argentina 1 &2, Utah, Morocco 1). If you have more space, Osteo, you just need to click once on the trash can in the upper right to see the list of deleted files. Right click on a file to restore it.
Nov 4, 2012 4:45 AM #
Bash:
Bender, I wonder if there are different settings for files that you don't edit. The files didn't disappear from Osteo's Dropbox last night until I deleted them from my online Dropbox. I had downloaded them successfully but they were still available online. Also, I think Carbon's Offset and I were both able to download Morocco today.

Anyway, the public link is a great plan!
Nov 4, 2012 12:47 PM #
JayXC:
Hmm, for some reason my computer only wants to play the video from the public links above. I was having better luck downloaded from Osteo's directory, that is when Bash wasn't deleting them.... :-).
Nov 4, 2012 1:02 PM #
Bash:
Hey, I've restored all the files I deleted plus one extra! Did you try right-clicking on the links in this AP thread? That's how I downloaded the public files.
Nov 4, 2012 1:05 PM #
osteo:
Ah ha! Barb, even though you have owned up to the mis-demenours of deleting, there is proof! those files are now back in my DB and it shows who deleted them!

JayXC - I did notice the same last night but thought it was unique to me (playback when clicking), but if you R click the file you get options and one of them is to Download.

At this point I think we all now know to move the files from our DB folders once we have them downloaded (copy and paste it elsewhere). As my DB is full again I am going to delete Argentina around 1:30 today to make room for more. If you do not have Argentina or Morocco yet shoot me an email and I will leave them up till tonight or tomorrow.

From what has been happening it is possible when I do remove them from my DB it might also remove them from yours, so do copy/paste them elsewhere.

dennis at offroadadventures (dot) ca

I guess we are in no rush, so I'm easy.

Lastly (for now it seems!) in the Public Folder you will see Eco BC, 2&3 are up, but 1 is not fully uploaded.
Nov 4, 2012 1:11 PM #
Bash:
Osteo, on my Mac last night I moved Morocco 1&2 and NZ1 from the local folder labelled "Dropbox" to "Movies/EcoChallenge". Apparently that deletes them from both of our online Dropboxes too ?! - crazy design. There's another good reason not to download the software, folks! In any case, I've restored them all in your Dropbox up to my 2.5 GB limit, and if your limit is higher, you can get the rest of them back in a few seconds.
Nov 4, 2012 1:18 PM #
Bash:
The key point from Osteo's message is to "copy and paste" the file from your local DB folder, i.e. you need to keep two physical copies of the movie on your local hard drive to avoid deleting it from the server. So bottom line... don't download the local software that "makes things easier" and you won't have to do this! Sorry for the confusion. :(
Nov 4, 2012 1:26 PM #
osteo:
Bash - that is crazy.... so it sounds like everyone has to have it safely downloaded and then I remove them and put up more.

The public Folder might still help with this as you can download from it by direct link. On my Mac, I just tried a download from Public and it went to download it to my default internet download folder which is not my DB folder, so that still might be the way to go.

ok-
I'm going to look into a good ole' fashioned FTP server, but as I am not really a computer person that is learning to make the wheel all over again!

Thanks everyone for helping out. I never noticed Eco BC 2 & 3 on the dropbox. Did anybody else get them? Did someone take them down?

FB, just right click on any of the links above and select "Save Link As..." and it should prompt you to pick a save location and start downloading.

Shared Dropbox folders are *so* last week. ;)
Nov 6, 2012 4:18 AM #
osteo:
Bash - you're hilarious!

THanks Bender for filling in my blanks! (although they are now up in my public folder!). I'll take a copy of yours too.

Here are some more:

Links removed due to excessive bandwidth with DropBox (I'm in the penalty box for 3 days). Will post some new material towards the end of the week.

The others I have I need to convert over to mv4 format, I think it will keep lives simpler and consistent as all the others I have put up are in that form.

I'm going to take New Zealand 1 & 2 tomorrow night and put up something else in its place. If someone needs it to stay up longer let me know.

D

p.s. if someone wants to put up Morocco again in their public folder for those that missed it the first time that would be great. Otherwise I'll put it back up once the dust settles later.

sorry to bother with this, but Osteo can you report the ECO links that Bender put up? so far everything from you has been mp4 vs those avi files. Thanks!

F-Torti, not sure what you would like me to do, convert Benders avi files? I think spell check changed a word in your request.

Maybe this is temporary (or just me), Osteo but I'm getting a message that the URL doesn't exist for the files in your most recent post. I downloaded a few of them last night and they were fine then.

osteo:
Hey Bash - Yup, looks like I have just been suspended from Dropbox in my public folder due to excessive traffic for 3 days!!! (1st offence is 3 days) I guess free can only get you so far!

They say I can use my shared/private folders so I might dump something up there in the meantime but as I am in the penalty box for a few days.

If someone else was able to get those files, feel free to share away!

Hmmm... interesting indeed. So before I need to join Osteo for a minor in the box, I'm going to pull my files tomorrow morning (Wed morning); so get 'em while you can from the above links I posted yesterday.

Hey Guys - just checking in to see if I got everything. So far I have:
ECO NZ (1-2-3-4 out of 4)
ECO ARG (1-2 out of 2)
ECO BC (only 1st out of 2)
ECO UTAH (1 of 1)
RTNX-CrnBrk (1 of 1)
RTNX-PrRpt (1 of 1)

Anything available somewhere else that I missed ?

ECO ARG1-2 are still available from my DB:

Jackson5, I've got what you have plus Morocco 1 and 2. There were more vids posted but didn't get them downloaded before Dropbox threw Osteo off for 3 days!

osteo:
They think they can shut me down!! muha ha haaa!! I deleted some of the files in my public folder as I think some of you had them and moved a couple into the Adv Folder from before.

A bunch of you still have permission into that folder, actually DB is probably updating your versions now. I just transferred over Leadville, 24 Solo and San Guan Primal Q.

They can try to shut me down but it ain't going to work!!!
Nov 8, 2012 10:46 PM #

Hey Jackson 5:
from all the dropbox and shared links, I've managed to get:

24 Solo
Eco BC 1,2,3
Eco New Zealand 1,2,3,4
Eco Argentina 1,2
Eco Morocco 1,2
Eco Utah
RTNX Cornerbrook
RTNX Prince George (Prince Rupert?)
San Juan Primal
Southern Primal Quest (Southern Traverse?)

There are some of these that you don't have on your list. Look back through this thread and you'll find links for several of them. There might be a few that you may need to get put in the dropbox again.
I'm off to Hawaii, so I need to get packing. Hopefully someone can help share what you still need, or I can help out when I am back on Nov 20.
Aloha ;)
Nov 9, 2012 3:23 PM #
jackson5:
The ones I did not manage to get are:

Eco Morocco 1,2
Southern Primal Quest (Southern Traverse?)

If anyone could share that would be awesome!

@carbon: lucky you - enjoy Hawaii ;)
Nov 9, 2012 4:52 PM #
Bash:
My Southern Traverse download failed partway through as well.

Jackson5, the Morocco films can be easily restored to the shared Dropbox after everyone has grabbed the movies they want that are in there now. I'll leave it to Osteo to make the call.

Would someone be able to invite me to share in the communal DB folder as I'd love to grab copies of Morocco and Utah. Many thanks. "cpiller at gmail dot com"

I think I'm allowed out of the penalty box now. I had the 2001 AR World Championships in my AR folder but have moved it to my Public Folder. I am in the process of uploading Utah and Southern Traverse again into the Public Folder. Will keep you updated with links once they are complete.

I'll get Morocco up again later, I think I might be close to maxing out my space again and we don't need to get DB upset with me again.

That was fast:

2001 AR World Champs:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/41352884/AR%20World%20Cham...

Eco Utah:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/41352884/Eco%20Challenge%2...

Southern Traverse:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/41352884/Southern%20Primal...

I'm at 93% so my box is full. As most of you already have some of those it should not raise any flags to DB keeping me in the clear.

Last 2 video's going up in a couple days:
Primal Quest Tahoe and PZ Telluride. I should have them up in the next day or so and I'll pull down Utah, Southern Traverse and World Champs then.

Ang - I just checked checked the dvd and it is just over 3hrs (3:24:29 to be exact) long the copy in my computer is also complete and the last scene does show the final rankings of the teams that finished. I wonder if your copy somehow got cut off at the end?

Jackson5 - I'll have to re-upload Morocco currently Tahoe and Telluride and uploading, I'll get Morocco up later unless someone else wants to put it up in their Public Folder with the link.

Of the ones that may have gone up, I think I'm only missing 2001 AR World Champs.

These other ones were mentioned and I don't have them, but I don't think they've been posted yet anyway:
Eco Borneo
Eco Australia
Eco Fiji
Primal Quest Utah
And
ELF Philippines, if you get that one to work

I have:

Eco: Argentina (2), Morocco (2), Utah, New Zealand (4), BC (3)
PQ: Telluride, Tahoe, San Juan, Southern
RTNX: 2001 Cornerbrook NFLD, 2007 Prince Rupert BC

ok, I have:
Eco Challenge 2002 Fiji
Eco Challenge Agentina
Eco Challenge Morocco
Eco Challenge Utah
Eco Challenge New Zealand
Eco Challenge BC
AR World Champs 2001

Mtb Videos:
The Collective: Roam
The Collective: Seasons
Reveal the Path
24 Solo

Trail Running:
Salomon TV Trail Running S1 E1-5
Salomon Tv Trail Running S2 E1-7
Salomon TV Trail Running S2 E8-13
Unbreakable: Western States 100
UTMB Pikes Peak S4 Teaser

I'll warn you that the quality of the Eco Challenges is pretty low, I'd say back to the days of Beta!! (Simpy - do you know what Beta is?!! haha!!). The Mtb video's are all full length, 1.5hrs long ish... and the Salomon TV I took off the internet and basically pasted the episodes together into 30-40min video's.

ok, all of Fiji is up as is AR WC and 24 Solo was already in the box.
Shoot me your email to: dennis at offroadadventures dot ca and I'll invite you into the folder.

For anyone else, feel free to send me your address as well.

Once you download them if memory serves you need to copy and paste them elsewhere on your hard drive, do not delete them from your dropbox. If you do, you will remove them from mine as it will be shared and will not be available to anyone else. I'll leave them there for a couple days and then remove them and upload the next bunch. If you leave them in your folder, when I remove them they will be removed as well.
