Potluck dinner? There are also restaurants, diners, pizzerias around that do take-out. Anyone got a projector they can bring?

Are you really staying up the whole night? Because I need to book a hotel if that's the case...

Sweden's in a different time-zone, if I recall correctly. And you can always sleep in one of the back rooms upstairs if you want to go to bed early.
Apr 30, 2012 6:48 PM #
Becks:
But it'll still finish at 2/3 right? Definitely don't want to stay up that long...

Yes, I vote for the same! Will be too busy to prepare anything for pot luck...

I've done a pot luck while travel once before... it's hard to cook something for a pot luck when you're on the road.

Foodwise, there are:
- diners
- Birdsall House, good food, great beer, but mains might be 25$
- Ruben's, Mexican, mains ~ 25$, decent but unexceptional
- El Conquistador, Latin American of some sort, good hearty food, if a little bland, good preparation for the long distance bu not really recommended for vegetarians, traditional, mains 12-15$
- pizzerias
- other (Chinese, and a bit further away, Indian).

There's very little Tiomila trash talk this year. Are Linné (ladies) and Kalevan Rasti firm favourites?
May 5, 2012 1:17 AM #
Sudden:
There is a free app available as well. I believe KR among the men and Halden among the women are the favourites according to some betting sites.

Neil, yes and no. Kalevan Rasti is the firm favorite among the men, (with Halden as the main challenger), although people have been talking of Fabian Hertner having some injury problems.... But the Linné ladies are far from favorites - rather it is Halden that is everyone's guess on the women side with Tamperen Pyrintöö as the main challenger.

Among the Swedish teams that perhaps could challenge the two favorites, I would mention Göteborg Majorna with a quite young and hungry but very solid team (Robbie Anderson is only in their third team!).. IFK Göteborg also has a very strong team, at least "on paper" but they have a chronic tendency not to succeed on Tiomila. Södertälje should of course also be mentioned but don't seem to have that real edge to be able to compete with the best teams on the final two legs (unless there will be a chance for "group orienteering"/following).. Kristiansand is obviously the second best Norwegian (and Swiss) team, but they don't seem strong enough to challenge for victory. Several Finnish teams, such as Vajakosken Terä, Turun M, Delta and Hisirasti (including many Russian and Baltic national team runners) are also strong "on paper" but most likely not strong enough.

The lineup of Halden is quite interesting and I would guess they will try to get ahead with a gap before the final three legs (where they don't look as strong as usual, beyond Lundanes of course). They actually have more Swedes than Norwegians in their first team this year (first time ever?), and all those Swedes are former national team runners (on legs 3, 5, 6 and 7).

On the women's side, only Domnarvet looks strong enough to challenge the two favorites for the victory. Stora Tuna has a very strong finish should they still be in the race after the first three legs, but that is unlikely.

Yes, they were having lots of technical problems. Only one camera from the forest was working (and only towards the end of the women's relay). If I got it right a TV-tower (temporary I suppose) had blown down causing the trouble. Don't expect them to speak much English either. It was like 98% Swedish during the women's race. They showed quite a lot of GPS tracking though, which was fun to watch.

I had no problem to pay by the way, but I used one of my Swedish cards.

The broadcast will resume in 1 hour and 10 minutes from now, half an hour before the men's start.

Big fight at one of the controls on the first leg of the men's race! Too many teams wanting to punch at the same time. Unfortunately no camera at that control, only the forest speaker's voice describing the mess. :)

Check out these gorgeous last leg runs by Halden's Olav Lundanes (1:29.24) and Kristiansand's Hans Gunnar Omdal (1:33.09) hugging the line (GPS Tracks). Lundanes' two wiggles cost maybe 70 s. Too bad that Thierry Gueorgiou (1:29.05) GPS died. Best time on the leg was: 1:17.20 Re-starters had a shorter course.
May 9, 2012 4:14 PM #
bubo:
My guess is that 1:17:20 must have been on the shorter version (13.9 instead of 17.5) of last leg from the mass start... You don´t beat Gueorgiou by 12 minutes otherwise.
