Many results and photos are now posted. Route Gadget is up. I'm sure more photos will be added in the coming days.

I have quite a collection of warm-up clothing which was left behind, mostly from Sunday's start. Please contact me if you are missing anything.

on one of the photos, close up of a plaque, "Memorial to TWA 128 (1967), AA 383 (1965) and TWA 694 (1955). All 3 flights crashed near the park on approach to Cincinnati airport".

wow... looks like this geographical spot was a magnet for commercial airline crashes

We're pretty sure it is just a convenient spot for a memorial monument, not the site of three crashes.

I vividly remember the '65 and '67 crashes as a young child, and growing up with the mistaken impressions that crashes were pretty common, and that there were often survivors (both of those crashes had a number of survivors). Both were on approach to the airport in foul weather, before the days of instrument-assisted approaches. Cincinnati Airport is on top of a plateau several hundred feet above the Ohio River Valley, and I believe that in both cases the planes came in too low and hit the hillside. I'm not certain, but I think the '55 crash (no survivors) was farther out and on the Ohio side of the River, but I could be mistaken - perhaps someone would like to research these...

Information on the plane crashes:

TWA Flight 128 - 1967, plane descended too low through a cloud layer at night and crashed about two miles short of the runway. There were 12 survivors out of 75 people.
American Airlines Flight 383 - 1965, plane descended too low through cloud and a thunderstorm while trying to make a visual landing, and on an approach from the north, crashed about two miles short of the runway. There were four survivors out of 62.
TWA Flight 694 - 1955, collision between TWA 694, a twin-engined piston aircraft, and a DC-3. There were no survivors.

So four planes actually crashed.

On a less somber note, I thoroughly enjoyed my first A meet and look forward to the Pig in 2013!

@jj--an interesting question, perhaps nowhere more famous than in this circumstance.

I wonder why the memorial doesn't mention the DC-3. I guess the pilots of that plane were at fault, but still...

Each side of the memorial has a different crash. I only photographed the one side because of light conditions. There are four sides. One is blank.

Well, the DC-3 actually hit the ground two miles away from the Martin 2-0-2A, so maybe it simply wasn't as close to the park as the other three, and there could be another memorial elsewhere.

mikeminium:
JJ, I am not sure that the memorial does not mention the DC-3. It very well might. I only photographed the side relevant to TWA 128. The side describing the TWA 694 crash is headed with the commercial flight and an illustration of the plane, similar in appearance to the TWA 128 side, but I am not sure how detailed a description of the crash circumstances it includes. It is also possible that memorial designers and sponsors (survivors and relatives of the various crashes) decided only to include the commercial flights and not the private one.

Got it. I hadn't realized that the description that sherpes quoted was from your caption for the photo, rather than from the inscription shown in the photo itself.

Photo of the TWA 194 side of the memorial.

One side not only mentions the DC-3 and lists the names of the two crew members but, I had assumed, pictured the DC-3. But now having looked up image of the Martin, I would have to go back to monument to see which it is.
Apr 4, 2012 8:13 PM #
jjcote:
The plane depicted is the Martin 202A, but the DC-3 is acknowledged.

This must be the first time a thread has been hijacked by airplanes...

I seriously doubt that.

@furlong47: We shared them on facebook. I'm sure Mike will also add them to the website. Thanks! Nice photos.
