Team NSAR Heavy Ready for the FRAR
Friday, October 1, 2010

Team Natural Selection Adventure Racing Heavy are pound for pound the heaviest team in adventure racing. When considering mass per unit body weight, there are none heavier. Even when you consider how much each team weighs together, these guys are in a league of their own. Troy 'NSAR' Johnston has been racing with Natural Selection for years, and he and Andrew 'O9Man' Lowery of Team Trail Shop AR have joined forces for the first time since the Eco Endurance Challenge of 2007. Expect these two to leave the deepest tire tracks in the mud of Fredericton early tomorrow morning as they vie for the big prize money of the Frigid River Adventure Race.

Thanks Grant! This turned out to be a great surprise race. It's usually only 4 hrs, but RD decided to throw us a bone and make a 12 hr category... for only $30! And there's some serious quid on the line too. T-Rock better bring his game face.

We may have to get the scales out... I raced with some (2) hockey buddies on the weekend and our canoe let out an audible groan when we came down to the water. :-)

If we'd had a head wind we would have needed a periscope to finish! :-)

Oh, and if memory serves and our wake is indicative... we're making a sharp right turn and I'm not a herp-a-derp who can't keep in stroke!

Anyway... old NSAR and I pulled off 2nd place. It was quite a race, torrential rains claimed my HID bike light. I'm hoping that all the kings horses can put it back together again. NSAR also got cold and stole my jacket all night. I would have overheated if I wore it, so it was fine, but he still owes me a beer and a foot rub. We did well, he was quite understanding when I decided we ought to waste 20 minutes bike whacking up a steep ravine with some kind of poisonous brush that made my legs sting for about 48 hrs.

Perhaps the funniest part of the race was when we decided to help ourselves to an apple pile in a farm field only to turn around and see a motion sensor activated camera getting the spandex clad goods in it's sites. Damn good apples though.

change seats and face the other way and you will balance much better with the added benefit the front person being able to put their feet solidly on he front(back) of the boat for better energy transfer (since you are not using canoodles)

Not a bad idea FB, might give that a whirl next time.

I feel I must have my say now.....yes, I did borrow your jacket, but I do recall you only took it for my use to begin with.....so the foot rub is OUT....but I will buy you a beer or two.

As far as the ravine hike goes....I think you owe me a beer for that one.

It was our first bike-whack together and you think I owe you something? I do recall you knowing we weren't on the planned route but you neglected to speak up. I was dealing with seized brake pads and my head catching on fire in the minutes leading up to the start so I was a little distracted.

I forgot to ask... Is that picture real or is it a doctored snapshot from the 'Shallow Hal' movie?

O9Man:
Ha! That was a good movie.

He wishes it was doctored.
