Discussion: Where do I put my safety gear on my racing kayak?

I recently bought a performance kayak (ocean racer) and I'm wondering where I'm supposed to put things like a pump, throw line and paddle float. The deck is smooth with no bungees. I figure if I do go over, getting the hatch open to get at these things will be pretty tricky and under my legs will affect my movement some and be a general pain the a$$.
I'm signed up for Logs Rocks and Steel and I don't want to be fiddling with these things during a portage either. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Wherever your skill and comfort level dictate.

Well, in a race, I'd aim for just stowing it away. Training in the open ocean would be a different matter.

I had a brainwave after I posted my question. Once I recovered from that I thought of using electrical tape to just tape the pump and the float to my deck.
Looking at the maps for this race though it looks like I'm never going to be very far from shore so I think stowing will be fine. Thanks!
