One Cowboy Relay, 2 September, Laramie, Wyoming, 6.2 kms, 21 controls over 4 loops, sunny, waxing moon, pleasant with a waning westerly wind, lots of sage, not so much climb, downhill finish. (Prizes to top 8 finishers; top 10 listed below)

1. Mark Everett, 42:33
2. Greg Balter, 44:56
3. Gabe Svobodny, 49:05
4. Michael Lucente, 49:19
5. JP Ingebrigtsen, 49:58
6. Alex Boras, 51:19
7. Tom Svobodny, 52:45
8. Pete Curtis, 53:09
9. Ian Harding, 59:30
10. Charlie Shabazian, 62:25

Notable: Greg Balter reportedly cost some big name Las Vegas bookies some lollapalooza sheckles by finishing second; they were taking the line he would finish no higher than 5th. One runner (name withheld for legal reasons) claimed to have suffered grievously from an especially wiry patch of sage that was traversed on all the loops, but upon examination of the reddened areas on their legs and queries into their recent travel itinerary--which included an overnight in Phillie--it was reliably determined that actually the irritated areas were misquote bitemarks and had nothing to do with sage at all. JP Ingebrigtsen traveled non-stop for more than 1500 miles by automobile just to make this event and arrived with 9 minutes to spare before the mass start.

I love the one-man relays! Too bad I'll be arriving in Laramie two days too late for this one...

Swampfox:
In the One Man Relay, the men are assembled in the arena, and at the signal from the Emperor, the gates are lifted and teams of women in O' garb made of silks sally forth and attempt to capture the men. When only 10 men are left uncaptured, they are hailed as the victors. As victors, they are each issued a Legion to command, and are sent off to fight the barbarian hordes until either they or the barbarian hordes are eliminated (since pin punching is used, these affairs tend to be incredibly brutal.)

In truth, in the end, it is hard to tell who has won and who has lost...

It is folly to bet against Balter.

It's been a while since I've read Swampfox. I had forgotten how entertaining AP can be.
