Here's a long shot but I'd thought I'd give it a try:
The weekend of Nov 15-17 I will be in New York with a group from Ottawa to watch our beloved Senators (the hockey team - that's ice hockey for you Aussies) play the Islanders and Rangers. As the games are on Saturday and Monday night I have Sunday free. What better thing to do on a Sunday than find an orienteering meet? I found the Mid Atlantic Champs 2 1/2 hours away in Maryland.
Is there any chance there will be anyone driving from the NYC area to Fair Hill and back that Sunday? If so could you give a ride to this orienteering/hockey fan?

Gord, if you join SVO you can score points for us, the greatest orienteering club in the universe!!! This is our year. I can feel it. Where is the "Broken Compass Award" anyways? Last year I heard a rumour that DVOA was sooo confident they would win YET again that they melted it down and used the plastic to make PEZ dispensers.

Gord, I know of a couple of DVOAers that live in and around NYC that you might be able to get a ride with. I'm not sure if they will give you a ride though if you join SVO. Greg Balter and Sergei Zhyk both live in NYC whether they will be coming or not I don't know. You can try contacting they to see if they are planning on coming.

Unfortunatelly I am out with a sore ankle and am not planning on going :( but no worry, DVOA has some serious depth, a force to be recconed with!

Gord, if you come, SVO will have a relay team!

As a founding member of Ottawa OC 39 years ago it would be very hard for me to relinquish that membership to sign up with another club but if the Mid-Atlantic clubs would could create a special daily membership I would be honoured (oops honored) to join SVO.
But what is this Mid Atlantic Champs? Is that strictly a club championship? How does the point scoring work?
Besides QOC, DVOA and SVO what other clubs would there be in the MAC?
Our Spring meet in Ottawa used to be termed the Interclub meet and the team points aspect was very important. We had very attractive trophies for the Men's Ladies and Junior teams. However too many clubs in our area have lost too many members to make the interclub aspect viable. Its too bad.

Its an interclub champs - all about club scores. Scoring is based on individual results in people's age class on courses, and there is usually a club relay that is included in the scoring. Scores are normalized to % of a clubs' membership in attendance, so small clubs like WPOC, IUPOC and SVO can be competitve directly with two of the biggest clubs in the country DVOA and QOC. I think technically the Navy-O club is also in the mid-atlantic, but haven't seen them in a while. Richmond?
Sometimes % attendance is used as part of the scoring directly, to encourage high turnout. Sometimes that is scaled by distance traveled - more points for traveling farther to attend. There is no set rule for the scoring - whatever the host club decides to do. Its more or less the same system every year though.

The overall points trophy is not in the "attractive" category, which may explain why it hasn't been seen for years. :) The "Broken Compass Award" is a cracked baseplate nailed to an old board. Highly coveted.
