Here's the local forecast as of noon Friday --

Hi everyone! Temperatures have fell off to their lowest levels of the season here in the Springfield area this morning with lots of frost. The offical low at Westover was 20 degrees - just shy of the record low of 18. After this very chilly start, temperatures will warm nicely today under sunshine and light winds.

The weekend rain continues to trend in a bit sooner with an arrival time now during the afternoon tomorrow. After 1-2" of heavy rain overnight, the rain should end by dawn Sunday with rapid clearing to follow. This means Sunday will end up mostly sunny and milder now with highs well up into the 60s!

Thanks to everyone for a fun A-meet!

Why was the ridge out-of-bounds on day 2? Just curious.

I believe its because that ridge supports a fairly uncommon hickory-hop hornbeam forest assemblage and scientists are studying the area to determine what other rare species might be found in the understory of that forest type. I know one of the researchers here at UConn was working on some rare species of Desmodium up there as well, though I think her species were found further down the ridge nearer the ski area.

Clint is correct that use of the ridge was restricted by the landowners (the Trustees of Reservation) to protect an ecologically sensitive region consisting of hickory-hop hornbeam forest.
