Sorry for the late notice here. Was distracted by the
DART impact today! On my way home I managed to see an overpass of the compact Starlink satellite train that was
launched Saturday evening. It was brighter than I expected. These days they are generally hard to see except during orbit-raising, so the closer to launch the better.
The train tonight was easily visible to the naked eye, even from the light rail platform in Baltimore city. All 50 sats in a line about 30 deg (three fists) long. You'll see the same group 2 orbits (~ 3 hrs) after us. If you can, step outside just before 7:45 PM PDT. Should be cake under your dark skies.
Here's the
sky chart for Truckee.
Find the big dipper in the NW, then follow the arc of the handle south to the bright orange star Arcturus ("follow the arc to Arcturus"). The train will pass just below that star in the WSW, then continue moving NE directly through the handle of the big dipper. Max elevation is 31 deg from Truckee. Snap some pics or video if you can. Drag the kids out of bed to see it :)
Circumstances will be about the same all along the west coast, give or take a few mins and a few degrees. Also look for the super bright Jupiter in the SE and fainter Saturn in the S.
