Mr Wonderful:
to avoid too much panic, I've drawn a radius from the start/finish to prevent coming back too early or too late, if my route can't handle it by itself (eg, by having sort of a ladder shape out and back at the end, which I can trim off).

If you have a circle like 1 km out, or 2 km out, then you know you can always do at least 20:00/km even through some really rough and hilly stuff, you just have to be inside that radius with 20 minutes to go. You won't get back much more than 10 minutes early, and you won't be overtime. (and the 2 km / 40 minute loop is more for six hour where you could really get out there)

Depending on your other confidence issues...what I do when spooked is start dialing back. Even on a good day, I like to start a course using orange-y routes (even on red courses), then upgrade to red level when I think I'm in the zone, and if I get tired or flustered, back down to orange level or even yellow level attacks on points as needed.

You have wheels, so slightly longer high confidence routes shouldn't even phase you w/ worries about speed. It's much less critical that you do shortest route possible since you can just tap into that fitness.

Plus, when doing an easier approach, things are easier, so you can add back in bits of fancier stuff if everything makes sense. Cut a corner, etc.

As far as being back late...personally I'd rather swing for the fences and try to crack podium and be one minute late and fail, rather than lock in 9th place. Which makes me not worry about it so much. Or at least keeps the worry more healthy and pragmatic than agonizing and potential focus-wrecking.
