Discussion: I call it garlic

Apparently both names are used but they are also called "Ramps" and due to over -harvesting are endangered in some places. In Quebec if you get caught with more than 50 (ie. you're actually harvesting them) the fine is $1000.! The suggestion is to pick only the leaves not the bulbs, and just a few so they keep propagating. Just found that out and thought I'd share.

We had that discussion about the bulb this week. Our cultivated patch in the forest by our house is doing well.

I’ve been transplanting from a huge patch in the bush we know about. I’m taking bulbs for transplant, but only carefully separating 1 per cluster of 3 or 4, and never the solo ones. I read that they divide like domestic garlic.
So far it’s working- the original patch is expanding, and we have a pretty nice crop on our hill too.

Yeah - they seem very happy in the hardwood woods in these parts. Hard to imagine them going extinct, not seeing and smelling them as we run and ride trails.
