Discussion: DVOA event

It's not smart for people to go.

Orienteering and being in the woods seems like a great activity for people to do over the next couple of months, but only on an individual level. Gathering people together and having people travel to an event may literally cause people to die.

I agree. Not sure what I will do if they decide to go ahead with the event. I'm part of the vetting team - putting out controls, checking them in the morning, and so on. I can probably avoid big groups of people but I feel like I will be enabling irresponsible behavior.

Personally, I don't see 180 +/- people as a big group, all spread out within 1-2hr start window, held outside, etc. It's NOT about the group itself, it's more about being responsible person and if feeling not well, simply isolate yourself at home. Simple as it's. But, I hear what you say ... and some actions may needed.

I think DVOA should be proactive and cancel the national event now. I would much rather be mocked for overreacting than be blamed for not doing enough.

Discussions are underway. I expect a decision will be made within the next couple days.

You may be carrying the virus and feel fine, come to the A meet and infect some 80-year-old guy who then dies. So that’s worth canceling the whole thing for.

The event has been cancelled; there should be an official announcement soon.

I’m only 49 (and a 1/2) but have asthma which puts me in the high risk group. I’m grateful for all the efforts and sacrifices other people are making to help reduce spreading the virus.

I am glad it was canceled, and I think it was the right thing to do. (It also took the burden off the attendees not to have to make a decision on whether or not to attend, because it is very tempting to be selfish and do what we really want to do even if it's not in the best interest of the greater community.)
Very glad it's postponed; I hope we're able to make it to the new date.
I would also hope that "some 80-year-old guy" wouldn't have attended, given the risk. But luckily that scenario is now moot.

@peggyd, just thinking about my Dad when referring to some 80 year old guy; and of course with me as his helicopter daughter, even if he were feeling up to it I would do all I could to keep him safe. But thankfully we don’t have to make those tough decisions and have those hard conversations! Kudos to the leadership here.

That was my fear - that as a vetter touching lots of controls, I could inadvertently pass along the virus without even knowing it. And my not wanting to participate wouldn't have helped if they went ahead with the event; they would have found someone else to step in I'm sure if I had said I didn't want to. I'm glad they made the call they did so that no one has to agonize over it.
