I hesitate to bike to work in the dark...maybe if I went super early it would work. Might give it a go...

I drove the last bit of her commute recently. They did add a new MUP (the one connecting the botanical gardens and mill pond park), but the 0.5 mile or whatever between the end of the nice shoulder and the start of the new path is pretty sketchy (tiny/nonexisted paved shoulder, busy road, too much commuter car traffic). And that still leaves a rough patch before the parking lot, I think, as the last road connecting the major cross town MUP to her office's road is again, smallish (buts lightly better) shoulder too much traffic. For a progressive, pro biking town, it'd be cool if they could go after those gaps more aggressively, but they are too busy kneeling during the pledge and getting fired up about redundant $100M train stations.

In light of that, it becomes an interesting game. Small shoulders are okay if traffic density is low enough (ie really early or really late) that people will see her lights and reflective vest from aways off, but maybe not if there's too much traffic and people are following taillights more than driving and scanning for other users.

You should be scared of the crazy drivers. Especially the ones texting as they drive in the dark.
Biking on single track in the dark is much safer.

Peeps at work question my mile or so tour of Detroit en route to the office. I note it's either than or hit Ford road with all the Ford employees texting and driving, and then they understand my choice!
