sadly i cannot be at NAARS Champs this year but i just spoke w Erl who is racing (go WEDALI!!!) so here are the details i know:

teams met tonight for a pre-race meeting. they learned they will be starting from Big Grove Brewery in Iowa City, IA and mtbiking at Coralville Reservoir but not much else.

tomorrow it's bike drop at 0600 in Hills, IA, maps at 0700, and start at 0900. the best guess is a short foot urban-o to start, then jump in boats for a 15ish mile paddle on the Iowa River down to Hills, then get on bikes. maybe some reservoir paddling at Coralville in addition to trek/mtb ?

the course has received a lot of rain this past week so the mtb section will be a go/no-go decision whenever teams arrive there.

i haven't seen a roster on-line but Erl said it's about 14 teams, 6 of whom are 3p or 4p co-ed. the race director has really done a good job with getting the city involved (i think thats the prize money sponsor!?!) and it's a bummer to not see more teams getting the experience that support.

but i am not going to sign off on a sad note, the field is small but mighty with UntamedNE, WEDALI of course, and Mountain Race Company. going to be a battle for sure! good thing Legendary is on hand to document and share. good luck everyone!!

From Randy's pictures, looks like Rib and NYARA (the Colorado branch) are there as well in the coed division.

I got the following from Brit before they started:
"We don't have a lot of the course. Both foot sections and the MTB O that will also wind up being a foot sction we don't have maps for. Big urban prologue A-M. Distance estimates--First trek that must be plotted ~12mi. MTB O 8-10, shorter if on foot. Woodpecker 5mi. Maybe 30-40mi first bike."

A smidge of a map photo...and not biased on the photo I chose (GO UNE!). It was all about the map: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1010323796... and https://www.facebook.com/northamericanar/photos/pc...

WEDALI first back from the MacBride State Park trek at 5:18 PM!!!

now a ~10mi lake paddle where every CP is in a cove. this could be tricky at night and i'm sure that was/will be a motivating factor for teams while trekking.

The video Randy posted shared that the race is moving much faster than expected. I wonder how much faster?

He also said the MTB was canceled. Does it turn into a foot-O or are they just going to skip it? If so, could be over by midnight!

MTB just changed to foot-o and i believe some points omitted. so the section will be about 3-4 miles long on foot.

the 3-person teams MRC and NYARA gained about 40 minutes on WEDALI (4-person) in about 3 hours on the reservoir paddle (about 10 miles). not sure if there was any nav issues with any team, but if not then it sure is a good argument for 3 people going fast in 1 canoe!

ok i went to sleep but happened to wake up for an update that WEDALI won!!! just before 0200. super fast race, good job guys and thx Mari for looking after the boys.

the race for 2nd place is super tight with NYARA-MontBell just 8 minutes ahead of MRC/MainNerve and Silent Chasers, and just an 8-mile bike ride to the finish!

unofficial:

Coed
1. WEDALI 16:45
2. NYARA/MontBell 17:48
3. MRC/MainNerve 17:52
4. Rib Mountain 18:44
5. Untamed New England 19:29

now Rib has a cell in red highlight on the leaderboard and I am not sure what that means, I hope it is not a penalty?!?!

Rib got a 10 minute penalty for getting a CP in the wrong order. They got it again in the right order and served the penalty on course. They didn't get an advantage by going to it twice so the penalty was minor
