I was so sad to have that conversation. Even sadder now that I've seen your track in that area, which looks very precise. Congrats on a great race with one small exception!

Hey Gally. Bummer about your navigation troubles.

Looking at the tracking we figure it was your team’s lights we saw briefly at around 4am on the SW section of the lake. It looked like one person went right down to the water while others stayed higher on the slope. One or two lights briefly looked our way but you guys seemed to be looking mostly across the lake. The shape of the southern shore is similar there to the CP location. Then after about 2-3 minutes you headed away from the CP and we never saw you again. That SW section of the lake does run a lot more north-south though eh. We then assumed you were going around the lake. We thought we heard some people talking to the north of the CP about an hour later (since there were three teams nav’ing from 15-16 at that time) but no teams were up that way according to the tracking.

By the way we never heard you calling but you were quite a ways away on the other end of the lake so not surprising we didn’t hear you. ;-). We only could hear teams when they got within 250m or so.

After another half hour or so we heard what we thought was a team yell out “wooo” over and over again and because we had heard gunshots we decided to yell back to assist for safety reasons even though we didn’t see any lights. In retrospect it was likely an owl. ;-). Yes even volunteers get sleep monsters.

Bummer about the bad luck dude. If you had arrived at the lake an hour earlier it was all lit up with the moonshine. In fact i’m pretty sure one of the top teams turned off their lights briefly because of the fog to use the moon to see the shape of the lake. When you arrived it was super duper dark. Bummer.

Yeah bummer after seeing my tracking! Funny thing was had we decided to swim across we'd have no issues but we were all too cold to swim at that point. Hammer that's funny you saw my lights, I'm the one that went down and yelled but based on where we ended up we were way to far from the cp for us to see any lights or hear you. And yeah the lake does run north south duh but so confused at the time as bearings we were taking kept changing. It was also difficult to see the lake with all the fog and no moon so at times we also didn't even think we were at a lake as there was so much swamp. Got to love Ar nav at nght.

I'm also laughing at the Woo Woo sound as when we started heading back we heard it to! We actually thought it was you at the cp yelling at another team but concluded it must have been an owl :) Sorry we couldn't make it to the cp, you must have been pretty lonely out there!

I was chatting with Tarno this morning and their team also heard that really loud owl. They thought another team was trying to contact them. Fun times.

Who knew that a knowledge of bird calls would be useful in AR?

Finally caught up on the tracks and your report. Tough go I'm sure with difficult night nav but way to come out of retirement "one last time". See you at next years WT! :)
