the west coast for Christmas sounds lovely... skiing, biking, paddling
Yes, I think I will visit my brother a lot more now that he lives on Vancouver Island versus his previous home in northern BC
HI CO! Nice trip! Where else are you going pow skiing this winter ?
Hi Ang, we have two more trips lined up with Revy and C-Bass and a bunch of the gang. We are going back to Hilda Hut, a favourite spot near where the Raid the North Extreme 2011 was held, and then we are checking out one that we haven't been to before: Boulder Hut, near Kimberley B.C. Should be good. And we will try to get out for weekend tours whenever we can.
How about you, how is your telemarking going? and you were starting to check out skimo?
Need to upgrade my gear...maybe next season. Right now I'm looking for a new AT set-up. Got some Scarpa Freedom boots and now need some skis and bindings. You have the Voile right? Was looking at the G3 100 and a Dynafit 14 binding. Heading to Utah in a few weeks for some touring in the Wasatch. Maybe next year I'm ready to tackle the BC..;-) Have you ever done the Haute Route?
I've got Voile Chargers for tele, and Carbon just got Voile V8s (had Chargers before) for AT. And I have DPS Wailer 112s for AT.
All nice and fat. We really like the Voiles: good value, light, ski well, soft and flexy which makes them easy to turn in the backcountry snow, yet they have enough torsional rigidity that they hold up well in heavier crud.
The Wailers blast through crud, they are stiffer, not quite as soft and forgiving but still quite easy to ski.
100mm is a really nice width for a ski, I'd say 100-110 mm is ideal for most people. Love the Dynafit bindings.
Wasatch should be great, so I've heard, I've never been. Must go someday!
Haven't done the Haute Route yet but will someday :)
Boulder hut- is that Boulder Basin?
Do you mean Boulder Basin in California, or somewhere else? I'm not sure what the skiing is like in that part of California. Our Boulder Hut trip is in B.C.
I thought I was tele skiing in Boulder Basin hut- it was an A-frame near the BC /Alberta border. Maybe the same Boulder hut? It was in the 80s.
This one is more of a typical square cabin (actually, two of them, one for dining and hanging out, one for sleeping), not an A-frame. Not too far from the BC/Alberta border, but not right close to it, it is northwest of Kimberley and Cranbrook.
I have a feeling the old A-frame was replaced.
P.S. Just got a pair of the voile chargers for AT.....stoked to try them!
Ok, got it! I did stay there on my very first trip, and Art Twoomey was our guide.
Great guy, great skier and avalanche pro. He also had Kia the avalanche dog, who showed me that labs can be great athletes instead of chubby couch potatoes.
Poor Art was killed on his commute (Chopper crash).
I remember we all did the bucket brigade one day to fill the hot tub. One of the guys went to roll in the snow and went down a tree well head first, naked!
I was on skinny skis in the early 80s. I floundered in the powder, but Droodles and I skied the icy "Ontario crud" on the ski-out better than the Westerners back at that time.
The A-frame is Blanket Glacier I think.
... 'One of the guys went to roll in the snow and went down a tree well head first, naked!'
... quite a visual!! :-)
My group of friends from the 80's would still be laughing & discussing who's turn to go pull me out
They got him out by the ankles. He was on his front...enough said.
It will be interesting to compare what we think of the hut and the terrain now, and on beefier gear.
Hot tub?!
Art let me try a pair of Kazamas for one run. They were slightly fatter than most back then.
My guesses were pretty good. I just looked them up: 67.6mm.
My current telemark skis are 110 mm.... and I ski them on hard packed groomers at the resort.
My fat skis were a big step up for powder. I was on a trip to Gaspe where I was the only one on newfangled fat skis, and there were places I skied circles around the others on the skinny boards. Next time out West, the Westerners on fat skis were so-o-o much better than we Eastern hacks.
Our fat Western Canadian skis turned some heads when we were in Norway :)
