Discussion: Night Championships or Middle Distance? (April 7-9)

OCIN and ICO are making an unusual plan for the Friday of the 2017 Flying Pig and we want to hear what you think:

On Friday, competitors will have a choice between running a middle distance course in late afternoon OR running in the U.S. Night Championships that same evening on the same map. Afternoon course maps will be turned in and kept until after the Night Championship, and anyone running in the middle distance event will be ineligible to compete in the night championship, since it is on the same map and might even share some control points. Of course, if you do the middle, you can choose to do the night course recreationally.

So, we want to get an idea of which courses people will likely run: Please vote:
A. I'm a night course fan and will run night champs only.
B. I hate night O' but will come to run the middle distance.
C. I'll run the middle but also go out on a rec. course at night.
D. other suggestions / ideas / comments???

The remainder of the weekend will consist of a long course Saturday afternoon and a 2-stage sprint on Sunday morning. The Friday event is just minutes from Indianapolis International Airport; the Sat and Sun events are a little over an hour's drive south of the airport.

C, I'm a night o fan, but I'll do as much o as possible in the weekend (also extremely unlikely to win anything), presuming that a rec run can still be on the normal champs level course(s), and not like the same day A meet rec courses.

B *Hate is a strong word. I just prefer daytime orienteering but do "like" Night Os

C , but then I'm not US champs eligible anyway.

C. I love Night-O but not at the same level of difficulty as during the day, so I'll probably step down a course or two.

C, probably. My sister's house is walking distance from Eagle Creek. I'm terrible at Night-O.

C, probably. Seldom get a chance to nite-O and practice. Not a good chance for competitive reasons.

A, if I were to decide to go.

I'm not going, but I would be a B/C. I would enjoy a sanctioned daytime Middle more than a Night-O Champs, and since there are two more days of orienteering, I would probably skip the night-o.

I think the proposed schedule is a very clever solution to appease to both the night-o lovers and haters.

yurets, how is a two-stage sprint in one of the most architecturally significant small cities in the US nothing interesting? Columbus has seven National Historic Landmarks. Or are you just trolling (again.)

Columbus, IN is amazing and I am looking forward to the sprint meet on Sunday. Allow yourself some extra time to get to know this small town that sets itself apart from other small Mid-western towns in a big way.

More like a small city (pop 46k) -- with some interesting architecture...

...and bridges.

Seems decisive but what is the Electoral College vote? (Sorry, too soon?)

C. Love night O but also love more O so planning to do both. If I had to choose one it would be the night O.

I am actually excited about the sprints more than any of the other events.

E. I'd prefer a day sprint and night sprint on Friday, three more sprints on Saturday, and the two existing sprints on Sunday!

Definitely C, it's the compromise between the two.

The biggest reason I go to the Flying Pig is because it's a big training event for me and I race my larger all during the day, plus I don't have the proper gear for night-o. But I would probably still go out recreationally afterwards for the Night-O champs.

C, the more training the better

As a Canadian I'll be doing the C ... I like night Orienteering but only recreationally ....

Looking for course info (lengths, brown vs. green options, etc) to help decide which races to do. When will detailed course info be available? thanks!

Probably before registration closes (March 26).

In any case, you will be able to change class/course after the course details are posted. After start times are posted, however, it will be much more difficult.
