Yes, I am thinking that a beagle may be in my near future, and I am not a dog person either, but, perhaps, if it is the right dog.

A beagle is a pretty high energy dog for someone who is "not a dog person". Perhaps a mature beagle would be somewhat less rambunctious.

From the little that I have heard about Barney, he is not what one would call rambunctious.

Barney is by FAR, the most laid back, even laid down, beagle ever.
My first pet dog was a beagle. He was very high maintenance, we got rid of him to a hunter after a year.
And their bark is really awesome, carries forever, another one of their hunting traits.
Barney is an exception, believe me.
