It was a great day for the 4th annual 4-Hour Get Your Bearings Adventure Race. Sunny and 45° in the morning warmed into a beautiful 72° by early-afternoon. 138 racers (including 78 first-timers!) lined up at the start in Huron Meadows MetroPark in Brighton, MI.
From the start teams sprinted and biked to checkpoint 1 where they navigated on foot around Maltby Lake. Teams could pick up CP’s 2, 3, and 4 by using trails or they could ‘cut’ through thorns and underbrush in an attempt to gain time on the competition.
Returning to their bikes at CP 5, racers continued on to explore old forgotten two-tracks in an unused section of Huron Meadows. About a mile and a half of these trails included big hills with steep climbs and descents. Two favorite moments illustrate the thrill experienced by teams. One racer, who typically suffers from motion sickness, had her teammate confirm that she just experienced what riding a rollercoaster feels like. Another racer reported, “I’m not physical bruised, but I’m psychologically scarred!”
Teams returned to the start area at Cedar Ridge Pavilion and grabbed their canoes for a two-point canoe section. Unusually low water levels added a challenge as teams worked their way up and down a scenic section of the Huron river (recently named a National Waterway).
The final section of the course was a score-o. Teams used their map and compass skills to orienteer around the woods and trails of the MetroPark in an attempt to find 10 checkpoints. While only 2 of these final checkpoints were required to earn an official finish, nearly 2/3rds of the teams were able to ‘clear’ the course within the 4-hour time limit!
In the featured 4-person CoEd division, the winning team, Team Futbolistes cleared the course in 2 hours and 26 minutes.
Team Diplomatts took the two person male division in 2: 34. Team Kevin + Sydney took the Co-ed division in 2 hours 44 min, and the top two person female team, Wonder Women, cleared the course in 3 hours and 21 minutes. An impressive 29 out of 48 teams cleared all the checkpoints.
Congratulations to everyone who raced, and in particular all the first-time racers who pushed through to the end for a great finish! You should be very proud of your accomplishment. Thank you to the veteran racers who encouraged and supported all the ‘newbies’. We hope to see you all out competing and enjoying more great adventures!
