Discussion: running out of Billygoat maps

We can no longer accept Billygoat registrations for the 1:10,000 map. We have as many registrations as the number of maps we printed.

We still have room for about 5 more if you are interested in running on a 1:15,000 map. You could also take a chance that someone who registered doesn't show up.

Ops! To late for me to get map, but if anybody is thinking not to go, let me know I would be interested in two spots!

Are there updated all-time Billygoat points somewhere?

I'll get them to Scott tonight, and maybe he can post them on billygoat.org. (fail.) Sorry I've been a slacker on this, I have all of the info on my laptop, and updated it months and months ago, but never got around to sending it off. I'll also try to print it out and bring it to the meet.

I can post the top sections of the lists here when I get home tonight.

Of course, in principle, one can run (and even win) the Billygoat without ever looking at a map - just hang with someone and out kick them in the finish chute.

Seriously, give late entrants a color copy. Lower quality beats no map at all. Seems like an appropriate late penalty to me.

I don't think the barebones but highly capable event crew has the time or inclination to go laser print maps at this point.

Moreover, they tend to be rather fastidious when it comes to map production issues, so it is unlikely that they would countenance vitiating the experience of anyone privileged to run in this most rarefied race through inferior map printing.

Where were the maps printed?

Good question GuyO. I understand the desire for high quality. But if I were last minute, realizing I could get there to run, I'd much rather have a cheap imperfect replica than not be able to participate.

Another alternative wpuld be to bring some old maps and let late entrants copy on the clock. I've never been a fan of fixed limits or not allowing late enteies, although I understand if you are restricted by your land owner. But denying entries just because you don't have enough maps is ---- fill in the blanks ----, I'll refrain from being so rude and politically incorrect as to say what I'm thinking.

Swing by the nearest Staples or Kinkos or small copy business, throw one on the glass and make a half dozen extra copies. Big deal. Minimal cost in time and dollars. More happy customers. More entry dollars for the host club. Everyone wins.

Isabel and I have just decided we will NOT be coming to the Billygoat - so that's a couple available maps.

Good luck to all participants this weekend. If I wasn't travelling to Europe this week I would have definitely raced (in hopes of getting three points). The Billygoat is still my all time fave NorAm race. A great format. A fun format. A challenging format. So many great memories in the 6 races I have done. Add in DVOA and Delaware Water Gap (and Twitter) and why wouldn't you want to race the #BillyGoat2015

It creates extra hype. having the volunteers do extra work to print out new maps in the last few days/hours before race time is not a good use of time and resources. Register early and you get a map. Simple. We demand too much of our volunteers. Wish I was there. DVOA organization is excellent!

Absolutely no problem that the "BillyGoat" does this or a select few other races. Particularly where people are queuing up to get a spot or where the bureaucrats seek to cap numbers.

However if this philosophy were to be generally applied (and it has been elsewhere in the past) it is a recipe for a dwindling sport. Always the same few participants, burnout, no newcomers, no new volunteers.

Yes for select races only. Since going with a capped entry in our Raid the Hammer race our participation, volunteering and interest from newbies in all other races has only gone up. (We cap at 300). Not many NorAm races have 300 people running at least 12-13km.

Now to create that 'Grand Slam' series of 'ultra long' races in the US.

The Billygoat is special for a lot of reasons. It has a history, it is different and just a little bit crazy. I am sure that everyone who has competed in it has a story to tell. Two of the funniest orienteering stories that I know involve both Hammer and the Billygoat.

You wouldn't walk up to the Boston marathon and expect to be able to buy your way to a bib on the day of the event.

I wouldn't expect to be able to get a Boston bib no matter what I did.

I kept a bandit from entering my corral for the first time in many (5?) years doing corral entry duty. Bibs were color-coded, and one woman presented a bib with the correct color to match her wave (yellow), but from 2010. I turned her away.
